I am not sure if this should be on here or a P.M., so please if I messed up, please let me know. I am not good when it comes to social norms/rules, but getting better thanks to those that have helped.

Anyway, I have a partially selfish reason for asking. Yes, some day I might have to touch the springs on the Mercedes, but right now have a Volvo 245 that I need to replace springs on. Some larger fellow made the driver's side lower than the passenger's! The front spring has a strut down its center but the rear doesn't. I was going to rent a compressor with aluminum arms, and now you have me very concerned. Is there a reasonable cost outer compressor with steel arms? How about one capable of compressing Mercedes springs?

RollGuy, thank you for this thread, B.T.W.! Now that I have it on the computer screen, can really understand all the parts involved. Tram said he replaced something and should be good to go, but on these older classics, one never knows! I thought the Volvo was fine, no clunks, and then in a couple thousand miles sounds like a black smith shop... It came from a cooler climate like the Mercedes, to the warm desert, so not sure if that had an affect. Now I have very little fear if I have to ever do it.

So the spring compressor works on the outside? I thought it was from inside... Fine the, will go that route.

Don't see any on the West Coast... Shipping most likely be costly.

it's actually not very much cost to ship to California... I estimated from my UPS store to a boonies in CA runs around 17... cheaper if you put it in a USPS box, but still need to think of insurance and tracking/signature so if it's lost, you don't have to pay for it.

Someone with hands on the tool can verify, but the hooks look galvanized= steel or cast iron. As for an MB spring, what makes it more MASSIVE than any other? Force in the spring at normal extension = 1000 lb +/-. Same for any coil over pax car. Germany can't conquer physics. Heck, they only held on to France for a few years. After the second try! France!

I don't know where "aluminum" came from, but the compressor kit I used was all cast iron or steel, no aluminum parts. The rods are ACME thread and not regular thread and seem very strong.

Anyone else wondering about the hubcaps/center caps on the Bundts?

I was too! They do work with that paint color and make it look sharp.

Most of the chain auto houses rent things like spring compressors too.

I have to agree about the whole spring compressor thing. But, I think that has been covered enough...

I think that you did a fine job! I definitely would have replaced the rear guide rod mounts though. Simple to replace with the LCA out. With those miles it wont be long before they start clunking.

This is the second car I have ever seen these on. they really do dress up the Bundts.

I saw a set a couple years ago in the Portland, Or area at a independant MB shop. It was a beautiful black/black W116 gasser, chromed wheels and these caps. this car was almost Concourse condition.

I always wondered where they could be sourced. might have been an after mkt option back in the day.

if somebody wants a set, I can likely get them for you. I gave them to a customer of mine, but could not find the hub clips to hold them in, so I can likely get them back... I've since found the clips, so lemme know if you want them.
I think the gold emblem makes them look tacky myself, unless other trim on the car is also gold.

Rich, you did a great write up and picture lay out on this DIY. you did what you had to do with what parts and resources you had at hand.

I used the Funola Red Neck BJ removal technic, and it worked very well.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/321615-red-neck-lower-ball-joint-removal.html

Used a Post Hole digger, after mkt not the MB official digger,
placed a 1/4" flat 4x4" plate in the bottom for the arm to rest on somthing solid.
Used 2 impact sockets 27mm & 11/16" to beat on. BJ came out with 7 whacks.

Lucked out, Indy loaned me his MB BJ press. amazing how easy they go in with the MB tool. this tool is a bit pricy, around $300.

There is another after MKT BJ tool that is a tube that you need a press to use it. Bodyart27 shows the tool in post #4 & 7. this tool is arond $100 on e-bay.

Ja, that's the way to do it! All at once. I've been rebuilding my front end bit by bit, which is surely much more work. Once the rubber starts to fail, it's all gonna fail. Thanks for posting this.

Convenient that you had the spare spindles.
