I have certainly read a lot about that. Given that the compressor is free and like new, I'll probably use it. Your opinion is certainly appreciated, though; that's what this forum is about.

I have been told that the R4 compressors are now made by Bosch and that they are holding up better. That's what was installed on the aforementioned other 123. So maybe the answer to avoid as many issues is to purchase a new, not rebuilt, R4 compressor.

That may be true, but the only NEW R4 compressor that I am aware of comes from Compressorworks in Texas. I am not fond of these, as I got a bad one right out of the box from Autozone. After that, I decided to go with the Sanden. I installed a used ($40 at P-A-P) Sanden in my SD a couple years ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since. Of course I can't say that about the heater, as it has not worked since I got the car (bad CCU).
Good luck with your used R4, you will need it.
