Have someone sit in the car, motor off, and press on the throttle pedal slowly all the way to the floor as you watch the movement of the linkages under the hood.

You want to check if the linkage going to the injection pump is actually moving all the way to the full throttle position.

Linkages could be be misadjusted, binding on something, or assembled incorrectly (I have had to fix this twice on cars I purchased).

If you have at least one half of Fuel and swap the positions of the Fuel Inlet Hoses and the Fuel Return Hose where they come off of the Fender Well. that bypasses the Fuel Tank Screen and draws Fuel from higher position in the Fuel Tank.

Note that because it is drawing Fuel from a Higher Position in the Fuel Tank it also means you would run out of Fuel earlier than is on the Gauge.

Clean the Turbo Boost Line where it comes off the back of the Intake Manifold. You could also T into the ADLA Line and see if it is getting Boost Pressure.

Check the Hose going to the Waste Gate. If it has a big crack or is disconnected the possible Boost Pressure is going to leak out of it.

What are the revs at 65?

{Are you stuck in 3rd gear?}

Does everyone else on the road seem to be going really slowly?

{Do you know you are really doing 65? Have you confirmed this by another method such as GPS?}

Most likely a fuel issue, either your injection pump is not getting full stroke (linkage issue) or you've got a semi-plugged fuel filter. Could also be plugged air filter, or plugged exhaust.

If your engine also produces too much smoke, and the exhaust smells of raw diesel, you may have an EGR failed in the open position. Those were the symptoms on my 123.190 (300TD) which was a non-turbo car. Perhaps the turbo charger would mask some of those symptoms?

A few things to try before removing the strainer to see if it is the problem. Strainer removal can be a dirty and unpleasant job if you are not prepared.

1. Swap the IP return and supply hose in the engine bay. The idea is to bypass the strainer and draw fuel from the return line in the tank. The return in the tank in a W123 sedan is about an inch above the tank bottom so make sure you have at least 1/4 tank of fuel.

or
2. run it from a gallon jug of fuel in the engine compartment

or
3. Tee in a vacuum gauge before the primary fuel filter/lift pump. There should be no restriction, i.e. very low vacuum reading if the strainer is not clogged.

What are your temperatures like?

I bought an '84 300D recently and it too wouldn't get past 65mph. I did the fuel filters and linkages which made no difference.

The temperature was running low (under 80 deg C even at freeway speeds for 30+ miles). I replaced the thermostat which was a rusted mess and the temperature went back to normal and I was able to get it to 75-80 mph. After re-connecting and adjusting the ALDA, I can now easily get it up to 90mph and have had it just shy of 100 on a few occasions.

Can you feel the turbo kicking in at lower speeds WOT? Is the acceleration normal for city driving? Before I re-did my ALDA, I couldn't even tell that I had a turbo diesel. If your boost pressure is way down, you may have trouble with higher speeds.

Another thing you might want to check is your accelerator pivot mount. The rubber gets bad over time and when it starts to split, it still works for a period of time until it leaves you stranded somewhere. Before it fails, you will have some strange acceleration-related issues.

Dkr.

Have you never had the feeling you're the only person who's awake - that "they" are all dawdling along - until you look down at your speedo and think "oh fu...

...that's why they're all so slow"!

I have had similar problem several times over the years. Following are recollections from not so good memory banks:

- my daughter was using car and she took it into Toronto shop (Eurocars). $50 later car was running perfectly. Bill only said "adjusted linkages"!

- I fixed another linkage problem. I think it was in mechanical linkage between pedal and engine linkages.

- Another time, it was something to do with the connection to the Bendix cable that goes to transmission.

- Boost line where it goes to the overpressure switch on the firewall. I had low power symptoms and it turned out to be a split in the rubber connectors at the valve. Teeing a pressure gauge into boost line close to ALDA should show if you have full boost or not.

This thread covers most other possibilities. Lots of good advice from the diesel experts.
