Ideal Differential

I've decided to keep the engine and the transmission from my 1984 300D (94K miles on it) and use it for a "out ob the box" project. Diesel trike: hence I would like to know which domestice differential ratio will be ideal to match the automatic transmission with. I am looking for something that will take advantage of the torque for faster accelleration.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking - I assume domestic differential means something from the US of A and that this is for the trike project...

...all I can say is that most OM617a's had the 3.07 rear end ratio on a tyre / wheel combination of 195/70 R14

The differential was changed to 2.88 in the last years of production of the W123

You kind of need to consider your ideal sized wheel / tyre combination to work out what how fast you want to drive towards sharp bends on three wheels!

I agree... with the stock configuration a nearly 4000lb car have adequate acceleration...

in a 750lb trike... uh... IDK... scary. factoring in the turbo lag, that could REALLY be a scarry vehicle to drive...

It's going to be hard to predict what's best...everything is a trade off. I'm running a 2.47 in my project car and am very happy. I'm trading a bit of off-the-line performance for quiet, economical cruise. Many would be unhappy with this setup but it's exactly what I want.

I'd just swap in what you've got and adjust as needed after you've got the beast on the road and have a chance to evaluate any changes.

I'm a big fan of my 2:65 LSD, and if I ever had to replace the car, I would take the 2:65 LSD with me.

I had a 2.47 in my 300SD and loved it. It never felt slow to me. Since trikes are so light I would imagine you could use a 2.47 and accelerate quite quickly.

WMO:

Note that three wheeled vehicles that are reasonably stable, and that steer properly, have two wheels forward, and one aft. If the vehicle is constructed as rear wheel drive, there is, obviously, no need for a differential at all. As to drive ratio, that is an entirely different matter.

Pretty sure a 616 could flip a trike without too much work.

Thank you everyone for the great inputs, yes I was referring to domestic as in Ford or GM diff to match the eng and trans from the 300D. It was the easiest design I put together vise a reverse trike, I guess with the lighter mass to move standard ration will do me fine. I am working on the reverse trike with deal wheels and still appears to be a trike vise a quad.

Oh wow just like one of these but with an OM617 up front!

This is what I would like to duplicate with the 617/trans as the power plant.

I realize that Morgan is in no way practical, but I still think it's pretty sick. If building something similar with a turbo 617 for power you'll want to use a fairly tall final drive ratio since it will have rather a lot of torque and weigh not much.

Yeah but this is pretty mental too

That almost wood grained effect on it makes it look especially mad - in fact it looks like one mighty fine way to loose your front teeth!

How about getting a 4matic gearbox and making it three wheel drive?

This thing will corner well and without the leaning may be hard to stay seated on.
