1998 E300d radiator replacement?

My car needs a new radiator (started leaking slowly about a week ago but never actually got warmer than normal). Replacing the radiator is beyond my ability, and I don't want to spend the money to have it done at a shop so I need to sell it. Unfortunately I didn't realize I couldn't fix it until after I just bought a new set of tires and some other stuff, but now I need to sell it. Any idea how much I would have to take off the asking price for someone to be interested? I paid $4750 for it in march, and probably have now spent another $2k since then total on repairs and maintenance (brand new tires, fuel lines, fluid changes etc, plus radiator, shocks and transmission electrical plate that aren't installed yet). It has 230k miles and works fine otherwise. I remembered changing the radiator in my old 300sd in about 45 minutes and imagined something similar, but unfortunately that is not the case with this car.

I don't really have a easy way to post pics, its black and the paint is in average condition but the interior is pretty nice still. It has 231k miles, and is really pretty much fine otherwise. Its just beyond my ability to work on it, I didn't really have any problem fixing stuff on my old car (replacing the radiator was a 45 minute job, etc) but this one is too complicated for me and I don't really want to pay what a shop would charge everytime it needs any work. I'm probably going to lose several thousand dollars selling it but its better to stop now I think.

It's not that hard to swap that radiator!

Put the car up on ramps so you can get the under shield off.

Drain the coolant from the radiator - red screw cap fitting on the bottom of the radiator

Disconnect the hoses from the radiator.

The radiator support cross member is bolted in place. Remove that and you can lift the old one out and slide the new one in.

Reconnect the hoses and refill the coolant.

Thanks for the reply, I hadn't noticed that you can take that cross member off. I think there are still a lot of steps between that and the radiator actually coming out (like how to reach the transmission cooler lines, etc), but maybe I will be able to figure it out. I don't even like this car, I just got it because I like diesel cars and I wanted one that the air conditioner worked, but its kinda been a lot of trouble to keep working properly.

Has anyone had luck repairing one of these radiators? It looks like the end tank has a crack and thats why its leaking. Would it maybe be worth trying at least for a temporary repair so I could sell it?

Is the end tank plastic? There are Fiberglas/epoxy repair kits available at auto parts stores for about $20. I don't know for sure whether they would work on a radiator but it sounds like you've nothing to lose. I have successfully used a kit like this to repair a leaking monovalve.

The only way is to replace it, as shops nowadays don't have the equipment to change/repair plastic radiator tanks. As said, this is a fairly easy radiator to replace. I have done it several times. The trans cooler lines are in fact the trickiest part, but still not that difficult...Rich

Where are you located? There is probably a forum member who would love to take this car off your hands...

I might be looking for one if it is anywhere near CA. I am driving my friends '99 now (he is out of town, and my SD is in the body shop), and am falling in love with it. However, black is not my first choice...Rich
