Going to rebuild my 722.315
Hello everyone..I have been lurking here for the longest time and now it is time to give back!!
I am going to rebuild the transmission in front of everybody..The trans is a 722.315 out of a 83 300D turbo..The car has over 400 thou miles and the trans was working fair but it had it's issues..It Leaked like crazy..just about everywhere..But the main leak was the secondary oil pump..After you parked the car after a run, within 30 minutes there was a puddle about 8-10 wide on the driveway..coming out of the secondary pump.. I have yanked the engine and tranny and have already rebuilt the engine.. Sorry I didn't take pictures of the engine rebuild..but it is done and waiting for the trans to be done.. So with out much further explaining..I will take as many detailed pictures as possible and step by step show every detail of this project.. Everyone ,Please contribute to this as I go along..If I am making a mistake, please tell me!! So here is the first picture..The trans is on a sawhorse table in my garage..and this is a close up of the secondary pump before I pulled it off..Bolts are loose and ready to remove it... Edit.. As usual a problem uploading a picture..

You are probably missing an error notice in the pop up window. The picture size can only be a maximum size of 800 X 600 (or 600 X 800).

I've got 355,000 mi. on mine,.Wish they'd built transmission like this again.I won't buy nothing new now, they all fail early.I use syntheic in both my SD trans, and 722.605.I think the fluid not breaking down, and using neutral at stop lights helps alot.Trans coolers are a plus.

That trans sure is clean! I can only assume you cleaned it before taking on the rebuilding project. I can't wait for the process, as I have always wanted to be able to rebuild one of these...Rich

Yes, after taking it out, I masked all the openings with duct tape and hit it with a Harbor freight soda blaster..It cleans it so fast!! With a power washer, it just wouldn't cut it..Soda blasters are perfect for aluminum because it doesn't pit the metal..The soda just absorbs the grease and then just blows off..
But it makes a white powder mess..on the ground and everywhere..But I have a pretty big backyard and have a spot to do it on.. To do this trans..and it was very filthy..about 15 minutes.. So here is the next photos showing the disassemble of the pump.. From what I am seeing, the way the pump works is when the engine is running, oil pressure goes into the cylinder and pushes the piston #10 outward..This disengages the pump drive (this is the piston) and the gears don't spin.. But when the engine is not running, the spring #12 pushes the piston back into engagement with the drive and the gears will spin.. So the pump only spins when there is no oil pressure from the main pump.. Here is an explode view from the manual and a picture of the pump piston and parts.. third picture shows that this area had it's O ring.. Mike

Anyway on with the re-build! I thought I'd ask => Do you realise that this is the secondary pump and that it is very rarely in use? Do you have the chapter 27 information from WIS or a copy of an ATSG manual for this? I've also collected a few links for the rebuilding of transmissions if you are interested.

Hi Stretch, Yes I have both of those service manuals and I am using the WIS 27 ..I printed all of the pages and it is right next to the transmission.. I found the 2 manuals from other forums about mercedes and I think that most of the stuff that I down loaded was from you!!.. I have gathered all sorts of pictures..exploded views..everything that I can dig up.. Here is the front cover page to the manual that I printed out..Something like 153 pages.. When it comes to the progress of all this, I am actually about 2 weeks ahead.. Something like 150 photos of the tear down already..I just need to get them up and detail the fine points of the tear down.. I will be posting a lot of pictures tonight The camera takes about a 3 meg shot using SR (scene recognition)..Then I bring it into a program called Paint.net..Not MS Paint..Paint.net has a resizer to it..just punch in the numbers and it does it..

Working on the tail shaft now..
The thing has a 30 mm 12 point nut..You need to have a deep well socket.. This socket that I bought is an impact socket and was just a touch over size on the diameter to reach into the hole and engage the nut..I just used a small hand held grinder and carefully went around the circumference until all the black finish was gone and it was shiny metal..then it fit..Didn't have to take hardly any off of it.. I used an impact wrench and it was off very easily..the tool didn't grunt at all..

After taking off the yoke..it just slid off..and removing the seal, there is a spacer ring missing..Part # 10 in the manual picture.. Also #12 o ring is missing..
There are things that I will post up as I go that shows that this trans has been opened up before and messed with.. So now because of the messing previous, I have been very carefully looking at each part as if it is suspect or missing something..
