Tranny ... done?
I live in flyover country here in Tulsa. My transmission on my 77 240D was having issues.. flaring between first and second and second and third. So, I went to change my transmission fluid and flilter to see if that would help. When I did, I had to make a run to the store and asked a friend to add the fluid while I was gone. So, he added Lucas stop slip to it.... a whole quart of Lucas. So, when I finsihed up, cranked the car, I had no transmission at all. Nothin.... So, I had it towed to my mechanic.
He took the pan off, saw what he described as "honey" everywhere, and just buttoned it back up. He assumes the tranny is now shot. So Now, I need to find someone to look at this transmission for me and at least confirm it's a goner. Does ANYONE know of a decent tranny guy in this general area? Also, is it possible to flush the "honey" out? Last edited by elcaBob; 06-24-2016 at 02:55 PM. |

I have one from a 76 300d which worked perfectly when I removed it from the car. Its been sitting for a while now but probably is fine. I nearly give it away but the shipping might make it tough depending on where you live.

Well I'd very much appreciate it! I'd think the shipping would likely still be worth it. Do you happen to know if it would fit into a 77?

Drain the lucus and put in regular fluid with a bottle of trans-x in it. There's a good chance it will come back to life. The lucus was probably just too thick for the tranmission to suck up. I've seen the same thing on another thread here a year or two ago. He did the same thing with lucus, and had the same issue. If it flailing between all gears there is a good chance it just needs to have its modulator adjusted or replaced, which is relatively cheap.

the lucas honey by itself cannot pass through the filter on these transmissions, it needs to be mixed up thoroughly before pouring it in. (I bet the trans pump is noisy too at this time)
removing the sump and changing the filter then filling new ATF can most certainly bring it back to whatever condition it was in previously.

Front pump still working?
It seems to me that the front pump would ingest that "honey" as long as it isn't glue- it should have been mixed with the trans fluid while the engine was running. There shouldn't be any "honey" on the bottom of the pan if it was mixed by the pump.
This does sound like a pump issue to me. Open it up and look at the drive splines from the torque converter to the pump. Or perhaps the planetary gear splines came up useless... snapped_bolt

Like I said, this has happened before in other threads. The lucas goop sinks right to the bottom of the pan and can;t get sucked into the filter. I'm guessing that this is because it was poured in with the engine off so instead of mixing it all just sat at the bottom.
ATF is cheap, and if I'm right it will save you a lot of time and money. Change the fluid and filter, add some trans-x and see what happens. If your tranny starts working again we can trouble shoot your flaring issue next.

I bought a tranny. It was delivered to my friend's dock and was shipped by strapping it to a pallet. Total cost was $250 which included return shipping of the core. The distance was ~500 mi. The shipping cost may have been negotiated downward because the vendor ships daily. This is going 1 way and should not be much unless going across country.

Thanks a ton for the replies, all. I'm going to get her back home drain/refill and try again. One other question, though. I have, according to MB, a 722.117 transmission. I believe there is NO pickup tube. Would that be correct? (the filters seem to want to know).

I seem to remember that the filter is the pick up, but its been many years since I've done one. I don't seem to ever remember there being an prion for a different kind of filter.

OK.. a bit of an update. Mechanic now says the shaft for the transmission oil pump is broken. Anyone know if that is a big repair?

If I was in your shoes, I at least check with a highly recommended transmission shop here on the Peach. If don't want to do that, consider Tom's or other offers and replace the unit. Hope this helps.
