W123 (85 300D) alternator pivot bolt

This is the one at the bottom.

On my car, the bolt is missing! Must have fallen out!

Checked with dealer and there are none in Canada. Have to order from Germany. Part N000931010388

Does anyone know the dimensions and especially, pitch of thread on the bolt? Dealer's EPC doesn't show it.

I have a 100mm M10 bolt with 1.5mm pitch.

To try it, I will have to try and align alternator with bracket holes first, but might be hard to see if it threads in properly.

Or move alternator up out of way. Not so easy with turbo, coolant lines etc in way.

Iirc on my engine that hole is not threaded, the bolt goes straight through and is kept tight via a nut. I have an OM617 at home that is completely disassembled, I will see about getting you the correct bolt size when I get home tonight.

Thanks!

By the way, epc shows no nut - just a lock washer under head. I "think" there are threads at front end near the belts.

That is correct. The head of the bolt is to the rear.

Local Lowes (Hillman) has M10x1.25 in 75mm and 100mm lengths in stock. If bracket has fine thread, those might work. Otherwise have the M10x1.5x100mm
(100mm too long but could cut to length)

Mine also has a bolt with a self locking nut on the opposite end.

What is interesting is I have read at lest 3 threads over the years where that Bolt was to rusted in to remove easily. And in your case it removed itself.

I wonder if some owners/shops stripped threads and then drilled out aluminum casting and put on a locking nut? If I can get the 100mm bolts to thread through enough, I could add a locknut (assuming it will clear the belts)

Looking at this epc diagram, it seems there are/were two versions. One with nut (Part 155) and one without (part 158). I think mine would have been 158 because I can get 10mm bolt in rear end, but not in from front. The part 155 and corresponding nut does not show down below in this link for 123.133 But does for 123.130 but even then seems to have been superceded.

The location of that bolt is such that it has permanent rustproofing/lubrication - at least on my car No wonder it fell out!

In the first illustration #170 is the nut.

The first illustration should be non-applicable for an '85 model.

It is, but that illustration is not for the 123.133 (like my 85 turbo diesel) If I look for a 123.130 USA version, it shows both types. Big difference in price for alternator lower bracket! Maybe that is when they went to double belts (bigger alternator?)

By the way, I lost access to MBUSA EPC. The nemigaparts site is a very useful replacement!

Looks like mine was stripped out, has a nut on it. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Didn't get far. Almost got frostbite, even in garage. Noticed that second belt that is still on is not very tight. Thinking maybe belt adjuster slipped or something and belts loosened. The belt that came off is twisted and being so cold doesn't want to reform to proper shape. I may try putting heater under car and maybe use a heatgun on belt. Then try re-installing and tensioning. If I can get car on road for next 4 weeks, that is all I need. Then install new alternator in Spring when I get back. Otherwise it may go to local shop. 2 hrs labor should do it Couple hundred bucks?

Talking Winter Fun

Jeezo-Peezo Grahm ;

You're making me remember my youth in Rural New England fixing old tractors and rusted out pickup trucks in the snow.... .

Anyway, if the belt(s) is/are tight enough to make a squeak sound when you force the pully to turn they're fine, don't sweat one being slightly looser, as I said before ; NOT AVAILABLE in matched sets no matter what B.S. the Dealer says .

If the battery shows 13.9 or better VDC once it's started (with everything turns off) the alternator and belts are fine .

If less voltage, first check at the back of the alternator to see what it's putting out, most non BOSCH branded regulators/brush holders don't ever charge above 13.4 VDC, why I only accept BOSCH brand regulators .

If the dash light is out and it's starting O.K. in the cold, stop before you do get frostbit ~ I remember frost bitten ears, not much fun .

See my posts in other thread about 55/65 alternators. Found my suspicion about oval hole in alternator foot was correct. No point putting belts on old alternator. New one here soon anyway. I don't know if they are actually matched, but alt belts from MBCanada come in packaged pairs.
