If I remember correctly, I think I read about someone using vice grips to clamp the spring compressor discs to the spring itself. That way, the spring compressor won't let go.

No need- the discs can't come out with the center screw mechanism in place.

And you want to make sure that enough coils are captured that it is easy to remove and install the spring.

I marked the base to be sure where the tabs were properly lined up so the spring couldn't sproiiing unless the screw broke. It is possible for the bottom to come loose if it turns.

Is the general consensus now that those Chinese compressors are safe? Seem to be a 1 use then throw away tool from what I've read.

Checking this website for parts, it appears that spring pads are only available for the rear springs for a 1984 300D. Do the front springs have spring pads and if so, any ideas where I could purchase them?

Exclamation Coil Spring Pads

All rubber parts should be factory only ~ ask the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine, Ca. and they'll send the parts to your door .

I use Tom Hansen there .
