It's terrible. Yesterday I heard that they wouldn't be able to get to them for 1-2 weeks, but now they're saying a couple of days.

They were going to drill some holes for ventilation and hopefully communication, food and water. But I didn't hear if they had any success yet or not.

I heard they might be able to get to them tomorrow- the owner of the company is side stepping any responsibility even though this mine had in the neighborhood of 325 safety violations within the last two years

You know it's really sad when these guys put their lives on the line everyday and they don't even have the benefit of an emergency exit much less provisions in the mine such as water, food and communications in case of a disaster such as this. Even more puzzling, why is the bridge cave in getting more front page coverage than this?

The TV schmucks focus more on what I call "graphical horror" - things you can see.

The bridge disaster in Minnesota can easily be brought to the screen with all the detail they choose. Everything is more or less in plain sight.

The miners are way down deep - out of sight - about all you can get a camera on is the front of the mine. No real excitemnt from a broadcast journalists perspective.

Kinda reminds me of the Don Henley song "'see the bubble-headed bleached blond, she comes on at 5 - she can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye".

Just my 2 cents.

Odd side note - my Subarmine has a tube that goes from the outside of the hull to the inside (I think there are 2 acutally) each are 1 or 2 inches in diameter, with 2 valve isolation from the sea pressure...

the rumor was that these tubes were only there to put soup or air down in case the sub was stranded on the bottom...

Often, during boring watches, we'd hold a bowl up to that tube and ask aloud for more soup...

Did not mean to make light of the miner's situation, the sub had these things designed in, why not the mines ?

So, what can you do with a 2" hole ? pass air in and out ? food/water tube ?

Unhappy

They got the smaller hole cut and put the microphone down in the shaft where they think the miners are and couldn't hear anything:

Hasn't been a bridge collapse is a while.

Well, here's hoping that the third time's a charm.

I wonder what the odds of their survival are after a week down there? They'd have to be pretty weak with no food, but they could survive if there is air and water, I guess.
