Even at the dealership, they had tons and tons of them in stock and seemed very desperate to sell one to us. We're lucky we got away alive from that dealership. I'm not going to say it is a horrible car, but IMHO it's not worth what they ask.

How long is the genesis engine going to last? Can it keep up with lifespans of European cars? How long can the body hold up? I go with name brand cars because most have been around long enough to get these things right. And we all know this driving 25 year old cars and older, and they're still running like tanks! I'll admit to Mercedes being a bit expensive and BMW as well, and Hyundai winning, by coming out with this copy cat of a "luxury" sedan, but there is a big difference with quality. I'm sorry but I just don't think Hyundai has mastered that yet, especially if you go to Hyundai, test drive one and then go to Mercedes or BMW. You WILL see the difference i'm talking about. I wouldn't even trade my 85 300D for the Genesis...

I wouldnt trade my 1987 420SEL with 113,00 in for it. The 87 420 has just as many options if not more. Does the Genesis have self leveling suspension or front AND REAR HEATED SEATS THAT CAR MOVED TO ADJUST TO THE PERSONS OWN COMFORT LEVEL? NOPE! All that plus much more for under $8,000
Youve got SLS on your 420? I personally have never seen one with it

It was probably a special option if it does......I've seen W124 sedans with it....so there's no reason a 420 wouldn't....

It's not FWD, it's RWD. The people on the Genesis forums (I checked em out after Fowler mentioned them) are complaining that the ride is too much on the firm side. Especially the V8 version which has a beefed up suspension. This is apparently because they deleted the air suspension which is present on the Korea domestic model and they probably didn't pick the right shocks for the stiffer springs.

Let me clear about the thread I mentioned which asked people what they traded in for their Genesis.
No way anyone should think that because some ( or even a lot) of BMW owners have traded in for a Genesis that these BMW owbers were enthusiasts, or even knowledgeable, BMW owners. They may have been people who bought BMW simply for the status of the name--and then realized the costs involved, and then experienced the other costs and expenses of high-end car ownership.

I pointed it out because the people that should really pay attention to such trde-ins are the execs at BMW, MB, Lexus, Infinity etc. They are one ones losing market share to the upstart Koreans. A year or two ago. the top exec at Toyota admitted that his greatest challenge was Hyundai--not Nissan, or Honda, as you might have expected, but Hyundai.
Think about it....

I was pretty impressed that Hyundai came up with this car. Their SUVs are pretty damn nice as well (Sonata I think?). They are seriously upping their game, which is nice to see from any company. GMC/Ford could learn a thing or two from them.

Point being - any more competition for Mercedes, BMW, etc...is a good thing.

Agreed. If someone is walking into a dealership to purchase a large, V8 luxury sedan they don't want to be doing it alongside someone buying a Hyundai Accent. A car like a Genesis is an ego-stroke for most buyers because few people can make the rational argument for why they need a full-sized car with a V8 engine. Nothing will spoil the mood faster than having to fraternize with the plebians. It is ultimately the same reason that the VW Phaeton failed - nobody was going to buy an $80K car in the same showroom as Rabbit or a Jetta.

IF Hyundai were to do this, they need to outlaw the wearing of white shoes and white leather belts. ( Think Mercury dealers salesman for the image,)

Fantastic, I still don't want one.

For starters it has the wrong badge on the hood. Secondly you have to share a dealership with the cheap cars.

Its like buying a $500k house on a $250k street.

Yep, its also the same reason why Honda and Toyota failed at the super car market.

It turns out no one is willing to pay Ferrari money for a Honda...no matter how good it is.

But Toyota did understand this in the late 80's when they created Lexus, I think we can all agree Toyota has been extremly succesful with Lexus.

I was just making a point, in that you didnt even know what you were talking about. Also, I know this is a Mercedes forum and brand snobbery here is like a " what muffler should i buy" thread at a Honda Civic forum, but I like all types of cars and there are different strokes for different folks. Lots of BMW guys will say exactly what you said , only about Mercedes Benzes. I dont give a damn about the badge or "pedigree" just that it is a good car.
