You work for DHS and can't get a Federal license to carry?

Terrible thing to endure for anyone.
Police have a bad job, but one will walk away from this thinking that the cops attitude is no one got seriously hurt, just cash, report it, but unless these idiots repeat, they will drop it.
You on the other hand, emotionally stressed, cut on back, out the money, just violated. You are consoled, It could have been worse.

BS. I believe that this will repeat be a more common occurance. Economy is not picking up any time soon, and more job terminations, will cultivate more crime.

As good people, we are trusting soles, HOWEVER, this unfortunate crime emphasises the need for personal vigilance. As stated previously, If something does not look right, it probably is not.

I have apoligized more than once for jumping to the ugly side of a situation, thinking the other person was up to no good.

Wife and I left a music store last night with a purchase (Midnight Madness sale). I was already unhappy about having to park so far from the store's outside lighting. I kept my eyes open, but my wife must have kept her's even wider as she nudged me on to hurry up with loading and get inside the car.

A 20-ish guy approached us while I was loading the items. He kept his distance while begging for money to help his family. Not sure if it was sincere or not, but the whole thing didn't sit right. I politely refused, got into the vehicle and drove off. I looked around during the whole episode expecting one or more accomplices to ambush us from a different direction while he distracted us.

I hope he was just trying to scam us and really wasn't in need. But approaching someone in the dark just doesn't instill confidence in anyone...

I gotta say we're pretty lucky, the whole bunch of us here. I got a bud who grew up in Richmond CA. His mom would send him to the store for milk and he'd have it stolen from him on the way home.

I also got to finish changing the tire...

BEWARE AS THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!

Glad you're OK.......that's a miserable situation. Here in the NE, we tend to take safety for granted most of the time.......the chances of getting into a similar incident are slim.

When the SDL broke down last Saturday, similar thoughts were on my mind when I was stuck in NYC next to Belmont racetrack in a not so great area. I was really pleased to get the vehicle moving before 9:00 p.m. If it got past midnight, I was going to be in trouble, as well.

Glad you're ok. This advice may be late, but get AAA premiere. Runs around $125 per year. If you break down, just give them a call and stay in the locked car. If you tell them you feel unsafe, they will expedite the call. Hope this helps.

I work for the computer crunching side not the law enforcement side. BUT I am going to look into getting a federal permit. Although a gun would not have helped in this situation. If I had been more aware of things it could have, but since the second guy snuck up on my like a lion on a wildebeest, I would have not had time to pull a gun before the knife was on my back. Like I said you must be vigilant at all times. I was lulled by the fact that it was rural Pennsylvania and not Baltimore or DC. Distracted by the highway noise and the trucks going by close and fast enough to rock the 'burban, and already pissed off from spending 2 1/2 hours just getting from Manassas to Gettysburg.

Oh on an intersting note, There was nothing wrong with my tire! The valve stem was loosend enough to let the air out! I am now thinking that trhese guys must have followed me into The Shamrock when I stopped off to get a pie to briing up, targeted me, then followed me knowing I would soon be disabled. If that is the case I cannot understand why they did not either knife me and throw me in the ditch or knock me out so they could strip everything out of the truck and maybe even take the truck as well.
Maybe something spooked them.

In any case I am glad that I got out of this with only having to buy a new tire and replace a bit of cash. The tire's sidewall immediately blew out and could not be driven on, although it does still hold air!

If you are driving through Maryland on US-15 be especially careful if you stop at The Shamrock or anyplace else.

You have to wonder...why me? If they really did target you, what turned them onto you specifically? I spend a lot of time in iffy neighborhoods, but never drive anything too nice(largely because I don't own anything too nice) and try to look alert. The reality is, if the bad guy has the element of surprise, you will have a big problem in a big hurry.

I'm even starting to get nervous waiting in line at the bank...bank robberies have been on the upswing, and I surely don't want to get in the middle of anything like that. The little Mobil station right up the road got robbed TWICE in one day, by two different groups recently, and this is allegedly a safe area. I keep telling my kids to be alert and keep their stuff locked up, and for heaven's sake, KEEP THE GARAGE DOOR DOWN so nobody can do a snatch and grab, or case the place and see the toolboxes and power equipment.

Scary little world we live in.

If this is true, maybe the cops might make a little bit more effort.

I've driven that road many times when I lived in N.VA on my way up here to Columbus to visit. I'm glad I never stopped on it on the way.

I'm going to ask again. What did they look like?

Was there any gut feeling when you saw the first guy that you might be in trouble?

You know, I have AAA Premiere. I just did not want to wait for a tow truck when I had a good spare, jack and the ability to change my own tire. I will think twice about not calling them in the future. I have called them when I need a tow (about once a year when you drive 25 and 23 year old cars daily)

Just a reminder to get yourself checked out, you don't know where that knife was.

Good idea! I will at least get a tetanus shot this week. I am due for one before car working season starts anyway.

As for the guys, well they were in their 20's (I think) black, and skinny. I could have taken one of them alone esp if we are both unarmed.

The car was some green Honda or look alike. I did not get the plates. The car was out of my line of sight behind the truck and then took off fast.

It could have been a Md or Va plate. I don't think it was a red DC plate or a colorful Pa plate...

It would have been hard for me to say to a cop
"If you see two black guys in a Honda or other green car and they have $65-$75 dollars on them, those are the guys."

Next time, I will be more aware of things.

I disagree. Give him your wallet, don't let him see the gun, when they get a little further away, pull it out and get your stuff back and make them eat grass till the cops come.

.38 revolvers are very small.
