If a scaffold is used, must be set up perfectly. Half-assed setups inspire over confidnece and lead to injuries. A good scaffold and replacing all the boards would be the way to go IMO. That would be expensive though.

I don't like the grief of replacing boards in the middle. If you could start at some point below the top and replace them all going up, that would be a lot easier.

Don't you guys in the USA have the option of hiring those alloy (aluminium) quick to assemble scaffold towers over there?

You don't need too much expertise to use them - just make sure you plant the feet (or castor wheels) on a solid surface and use the Stabilizers that should also be provided.

I've used one that was 10 metres high that had trap doors in the floors that allowed you to safely climb to the top of the tower within the structure - thereby not over balancing the tower.

That does look pretty nice. The aluminum would be lighter and easier to handle and would not rust.

I got up there and swept the pine straw off this morning. Climbing up on the porch roof and looking at it I remembered why I like to do car work more than carpentry work. Standing on the roof next to the windows I need to get up another 10' at least. I've got a friend coming over to take a look at it with me. I do have some pole scaffolding available and may look at setting some up on top of the roof. The joist for the porch roof boards looks to be in good condition so if I go with the scaffolding I'll put some more supports on top of it. This kind of work intimidates me pretty good.

uh oh

Here are some shots from inside the attic. The wood is eaten up where the holes are. I'm going to have to get some help on this one.

You need to get a framer in their to see what they can do. Maybe they can sister some of those joists up.

Is that squirrell damage?

I wonder what the attraction is to that particular place. It almost looks as if they thought they were in prison and they had to chew their way out.

If that's bird poop or bat guano, that can be really nasty stuff to breathe in. Wear a respirator/mask. Costco and Lowe's both sell pretty good rubber-style masks that aren't as restrictive as the doctor-style dust masks.

Termites, ants, or rodents? Hopefully the latter, their damage should be restricted to the attic.

Alright - success

I was able to reseal the upper sections today anyway. I would have gotten it all completed but I ran out of wood. I have attached pictures of the exterior. I did not do anything to the structure underneath yet. Used screws to put it together with. As long as I did not look down I was fine.

I ended up using 1x6 ceder which worked out great. Notice the nice scaffolding I picked up.

It does look like squirrel damage to me. I'm currently having squirrel problems in my own attic and they are biting on the wood in a similar manner.

You have many great products in the Netherlands that aren't legal here.

I did some checking, and I only see Altrex suspended scaffolding available in the US.

My guess is, it's very expensive. You should try manufacturing it in China.

I was recently trying to find an alternative to the Altrex scaffolding - as whilst it is available here, like most things here they are quite pricey... A working height of 6m so a platform level of 4m was going to set me back about 1200 euros that's about 1700 USD which for my use is a bit too much for me to pay at the moment.

Anyway, to cut a long story short I looked as far away as Germany (where the prices are often about 30% cheaper) to France, and the UK. This is what I found out.

Shipping costs will kill the deal!

In the UK there were several people doing a much cheaper version of the modular aluminium style scaffold towers only they are made from galvanised steel. (Search on Google or google.co.uk for "galvanised scaffold") The purchase price is way cheaper but the shipping costs are stupid - so you end up paying roughly the same amount of money for an aluminium one bought here. No point eh?

It might be of interest to a group of people that live closer together however (if you were all looking for scaffolding???) that there is a willing Chinese solution that I found:-

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/51751306/Aluminum_Tower_Scaffold_with_4_3m.html

P.S Engatwork I'm glad you've found a stable work platform! As for the animal damage is there any way you can treat the wood and add braces to the affected area? Otherwise it looks like a (hopefully partial) roof off job to me. (Sorry to send bad news!)

I agree with Hattie that the problem can be repaired from the inside by sistering up rafters with the existing ones.
