Sooo, the terrorists win??
New international flight restrictions on luggage and screening.
Not that I necessarily disagree with them. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34601479/ns/travel-tips/?GT1=43001 .......International travelers, however, are sure to notice a difference. New security measures for international flights heading toward the U.S., TSA said, will require increased gate screening “including pat-downs and bag searches” and a variety of in-flight restrictions. “During certain portions of the flight,” passengers may be asked to put away their personal items, turn off electronic equipment, keep blankets, pillows and personal items off their laps, and stay seated, the agency said..................... |

Like flying didn't suck enough already, we get more security theater. I do my best to stay off flights these days; between this nonsense and the bankrupt airlines, I drive whenever possible.

If some nutcase US citizen decides he's going to walk out one morning and punch the first person whose looks he doesn't like, I suspect he would succeed in that. Or any nimrod anywhere. The random belligerant, terrorist, whatever, is going to be hard to stop. The increased security will slow it but we can't all walk around with guns ready to be lifted and fired. And even if we did, you don't know when the nutcase is going to strike. Such things occur so rarely that you can never be completely on guard for them.
No easy answer.

Basically yes. We're terrorizing ourselves.
They knew pretty damn well that all it would take to bugger us would be well placed publicity stunts. Then all we do from that point forward is freak ourselves out with crazy "security" stunts like this that do absolutely nothing to protect us. The only exception to the new rules are the reinforced bulkheads between the passenger cabin and the flight deck. There was an article a while ago about how a man faked a boarding pass to get past security. He couldn't obviously get onto the plane, but could have very well used a fake ID to bypass the baggage ID checking and even the "Do not fly" list. DHS in itself is a complete blunder. I'm not going to get started. I'd rather take a train then fly.

The only question of any relevance here is why the hell a named terror suspect was allowed on a plane in the first place. Beyond that everything else is BS.

* No movement for the last hour of the flight.
* No electronics for the last hour of the flight. * NTSB is recommending a pat-down of all passengers prior to boarding. Want to watch air travel die a slow death? I will be flying as little as possible, and YES the terrorists are indirectly winning b/c we have a govt run by idiot lawyers.

One subject of the administration’s security review will be the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, or TIDE, the extensive collection of data on more than 500,000 people into which the warning from Mr. Abdulmutallab’s father’s was entered. A law enforcement official said it was not unusual that a one-time comment from a relative would not place a person on the far smaller no-fly list, which has only 4,000 names, or the so-called selectee list of 14,000 names of people who are subjected to more thorough searches at checkpoints. Based on this, he was on a list with about half a million others not on the no-fly list. |

Let's see how well that would work in practice. Can you imagine the logistics of trying to verify the identity of 500K people who don't want to be identified? I would be surprised if they could actually manage 4000 identities.

It isn't the lawyers. It is the people. If the 12 morons do not give away money because they feel it is free money and they would rather err on the side of the little guy when there is an insurance corp or some other corp or govt, etc, etc. Do you think the stupid awards are the end of it? I think not. For the next case, the lawyer will use that old case and say "Well, it costs you $1000 to go to court and the 12 morons will side with me, more than likely. So, the average award is $10000. Lets call it quits at say $6000.".

From "The Boston Globe"- "The federal government has inflated the ``No Fly List" to 200,000 names. But the list has nabbed more members of Congress than it has terrorists. US Senator Edward M. Kennedy and US Representative John Lewis have been inconvenienced by it, and anyone named David Nelson is likely to face a major interrogation each time he flies. Federal officials make it very difficult to correct the list, thus tormenting citizens who are guilty of nothing more than having a name resembling a name suspected sometime by some government official." |
