Here, this is what we're looking at, it's really hard to find at their site:

About the only option I have on the computer would be (and I am a computer dummy so bear with me) a wifi sort of setup, wireless internet in other words?

$35 for 200mb.mo or $60 for 5GB, which should I go with? No idea how many bytes I go through in a month.

I somehow lucked into a deal with my Sony-Ericsson phone. I was way past my contract completion with Verizon, resisting all their pitches to re-up. Good thing as I got this SE TM506 with an arrangement of unlimited web - tethered from phone to PC, 1000 minutes cell, and unlimited text for $75 a month. Hell, I was spending nearly $60 with Verizon for 450 minutes which I was always sweating exceeding.

I don't imagine I'll get this good of a deal when the 2 year contract is up. It's with T-Mobile BTW, and coverage has been good enough.

Speed looks bad on paper, just under 1 mb sec., but it feels way faster than many DSL lines I've been on. A little faster would be nicer but it's acceptable. I think it's about the same thing you're referring to with when you say wireless internet. Only I have no limit. I got lucky. Found it at Radio Shack, couldn't say if anything like this is still happening.

I've got Centurytel/CenturyLink as my ISP. My original "deal" was Dialup...they came through the neighborhood about 2 years ago and told everyone they were "upgrading" the services that they had available.

I couldn't have cared less.

They kept pestering...sending mailer after mailer touting the improvement in speed, service, blah, blah, blah.

I wouldn't budge.

Then, one crappy, cold, rainy morning (about 0300), I come home from some God-forsaken, sucky, repair job up north, and stuck between my front door and the storm door was this box, about 6" x 6" x 6".

"WTF!?!?!?"

I crack open the front door, kick the box into the house and wonder "What the hell didn't I order? It's mine for the keeping if I have no idea who/what ordered it."

It had a return tag saying nothing more than WESTEL on it. I opened it up and sure enough, it was a modem. Again, that I didn't order. I eventually managed to find out that Centurytel/Link went ahead and upgraded my "Dialup" to "DSL" - due to the fact that they needed everyone on the "node" at a certain level for their equipment to run their NexGen level of gear..."Dialup" wasn't cutting it for them. And SINCE I didn't order the DSL, they have to give it to me for the old "Dialup" price.

AS LONG AS I DON'T CHANGE MY SERVICE ORDER OR UPGRADE, I'm "grandfathered" in at that "Dialup" price. They don't offer "Dialup" anymore and if there's no "Dialup" offered, they can't raise a price on something they don't have or offer.

I still get 3-4 mailings each week touting the wonders of fast, speedy, error-free connections that could skin a cat faster than you can spit, but I'll remain the cheap, old-fart ba5tard that I am and let you folks know when I get "upgraded" again with the NexGen level of excitement when DSL won't cut it anymore for those folks.

All for $19.95/month.

I have the same kind of thing as CMAC , unlimited voice/text/web from MetroPCS, tethered to my PC for $40/mo. Web is about like dialup. Can't get DSL here and I have absolutely no interest in cable TV or Dish (I don't care to rot my brain more than it is). Doesn't look like they cover you in WI, though...

DSL is $19.95 per month from Verizon............for anybody who walks in the door...........no surprise. It's such a POS and so unreliable unless you're next to their facility that it's only worth $19.95.

I pay $45.00 for the cable and am pleased with their reliability and their customer service. The difference between Verizon and the cable company is huge when you have a problem.

Your $19.95 and my $19.95, obviously, are of differing quality.

Even though your DSL may suck unless you're right on top of the first node coming from the Headend of the operation, mine isn't that bad for what I do and I'm at the far end of the service-area "whip" (if you will).

I'm pleasantly content.

As for the service angle? Service went out the door long before the Stock Market broke the 10,000-point mark THE FIRST TIME.

Regardless the ISP source...phone, cable, satellite, smoke signal...

Belt and suspenders. Hiding the SSID will only slow down a hacker because he will have to do more work. Obviously however if someone was truly hell bent on getting something you have it would be only a matter of time.

Not necessarily. Most people do not check to ensure that there is an active SSL connection. In fact in most browsers all you have is a little lock box and the "https". If somebody was malicious enough, all it would take is to force the "www.gmail.com" to point directly to http://www.gmail.com and hijack it from there. Set up a web server and force all current users to a hacked DNS server to point to your special web page.

That's simply paranoid. As mentioned above, most anything important is completely safe from prying eyes.
You missed my point about setting up a web server and pointing unknowing users to a fake web page that looks like the identical one. It's not difficult and entirely easy to set up as I have done before in demos for information security classes.

Your suggestions are dangerous and could potentially leave users with identity theft problems.
You don't have to heed my warnings, but keep them in mind. I've met a handful of people who would have no qualms doing this add to the fact i've demoed something like this for a project in one of my computer science classes. Be careful, nothing is worse than identity theft.

Connecting to a VPN would shield you from such an attack.

I'm not crazy about living in the Bay Area in many regards but I can only imagine that my internet speed on the setup I have is pretty happening compared to more rural locations. Tradeoffs with all matters, I reckon.

I wouldn't install AT&T if they gave it to me free unless that was the only choice.

And not just any VPN. It needs to have a strong public-private key arrangement to prevent the man-in-the-middle. SSL isn't going to cut it, that's for sure.

I think I can trust the telcos pretty well. Probably anyone with an open connection isn't going to have the knowledge of how to perform a man-in-the-middle attack, but there's always the notion of a honey pot.

Oh definitely, as long as the connection I have is to some company I pay for I hope to god that there isn't some malicious stuff going on the other end.

On an open wifi connection all bets are off. I don't trust open wifi at all to the point I pay for wireless internet access off of my phone. Too much risk involved for just casual browsing. Call it paranoia, but to script kiddies it's fair game.

Hey dude, it's your old buddy, elaborate for me. They were nothing but nice when I left. They were nothing but nice when I came back. Mt mother in law moved 2 blocks from her old house last year and the only places she DIDN'T get a hassle was the post office and ATT.

Of all the people who pay bills, AT&T has the most complains, at least around here. I fell for one of their offers of a free trial Blackberry. Big mistake. There were a couple of problems with the phone. Took forever to get ahold of someone to resolve it. Finally somebody gave me the green light to take it to a store to exchange. A week later, I decided it wasn't working out for me. Had the account canceled and the phone returned. Not before a long conversation with them. At the store, they wanted to charge me a $40 restocking fee. So much for free trial. I was so sick of it, I decided to pay them to get it off my back. The end. Nope. Next month, I get a "wireless" charge on my phone bill. AT&T said "That is from the wireless dept. Don't know anything about it. Go talk to them.". Wireless said "Talk to land line service. We don't know who you are. Do you have the ESN?". Of course not. I gave the phone back. Finally, we found that they DID NOT deactivate the SIM like they should have and it was straightened out. Phone timer said 100 mins plus.

Our shop needs a dedicated internet connection. One day, it was VERY slow. Called them up and they said "We'll check it out and call you back in half an hour.". 3 hrs later, I called them. Seems like a server basement flooded but nobody is there. Everyone is sent home. Took 4 days before internet service was restored. No idea in the meantime as to how long it would take.

Had a trouble with the modem. They thought it was a line issue and said they would have to come there and check it out. Set up an appointment for Sat morning. Told them that we would not be there past 3. Please confirm appointment on Fri. Of course they didn't and I had to call them. They confirmed the appointment. Sat noon and nobody came yet. Called again. Finally, somebody said the guy would be there after 3. WTF!!!!

If it's free, and it doesn't hurt me - I'm down with it!
