Somebody did a pretty conclusive study on that recently. It's true for alcohol, but not for caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee.

I have never been terribly overweight and about the only medical issue I've ever dealt with was what my doctor called "borderline" cholesterol. At my age I take a low dose aspirin a day and no meds of any kind. I point this out, before I tell what works for me.

I went through a period where I went to a pretty strict Atkins, starting out with no more than 20 grams of carbs a day. My office was in a tower in those days, and I did 12 stories of stairs up and down every day. I dropped my cholesterol down in 90 days and shed 20 pounds in about 30 days. I was about 52 or so at the time. I am now 63.

At my current age I have to work out and watch my eating to keep in shape and my numbers where the doctor wants them. For a 63 year old I am in great physical condition, but it means a 30 minute work out five days a week.

All that said as a caution, if your doctor will let you do a low carb diet, the toughest part will be the induction period of 2 weeks at 20 grams or less of carbs per day. After that 2 weeks if you stay with it, that weight will melt off so fast your biggest problem will be buying clothes fast enough so that they don't fall off of you.

Very best of luck with it. Set your mind on the goal and don't let anything get in your way. Low carb is fun because steaks fit into it quite nicely.

I'm scared to... I'm afraid of fat chicks, and sex with them is very bothersome.

Whose ancestors? Where is the proof for this? I hate these pseudoscientific diets. If they work, great, but leave the pop-anthropology out of it.

I would advise against eating one big meal for the day. Not only does it make you overeat but it also messes with your blood sugar/insulin levels.

I ate one meal a day for years, and was very healthy during that time. When my wife started serving me meals such as breakfast and lunch, that's when things went haywire.

The one meal a day thing just happens to also coincide with when you were a lot more active and and younger with a higher metabolism, correct? Plus if you eat the night meal the same but add two more meals of course you will put on weight.

One meal a day makes your body work backwards. You put your body into starvation mode when it doesn't get nutrients every few hours. Then when it does get the nutrients it clings on to them turning them into fat for storage since your body thinks it will be going awhile without nutrients again. The best idea would be to take those same amount of calories you eat at one sitting and spread them out over about 5 smaller meals. Your body would not hold on to as much since it knows it is getting nutrients again soon. Now of course this is easier said than done. As Ara said it really is almost as simple as calories in versus calories used but of course if you can make your body burn more (like I described) it will help burn more and one can take in more.

I am about 10 lbs more right now than I was when I was 18. I'm not in near as good of shape as I used to be though.

Today consisted of 3 handfuls of unsalted peanuts, brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds, 2 cups of black coffee, and 6 large glasses of water.

Dinner consisted of 8oz rib eye seasoned with fresh ground black pepper, a pinch of sea salt and garlic, 1/4 cup of fresh corn, and 1/4 cup of cooked carrots. It was all washed down with a large glass of iced tea with lemon.

Desert was a little over 3/4 fresh pineapple, frozen for an hour.

I'm stuffed and satisfied. All but the pineapple was eaten prior to 6pm. I'll probably have another glass or three of water before bed.

I drink LOTS of water as well. When ever we go out to eat, I feel bad for the server as they fill up my water glass 3-4 times minimum.

If you can stick with this diet it will probably work.
