Diet question...

The danged BP pills, as well as other physical issues, caused me to gain about 50 pounds since January. I've quit taking all the meds, with the support of a better doctor, and am wanting to shed this weight quickly.

I've read about the Paleo Diet, also known as the Caveman Diet.

Has anyone tried this? It makes sense, and is similar to what I did 10 years ago when I lost 100 pounds in 11 months. The only thing different, is that this diet doesn't include the grapefruit juice 3 times a day.

Any thoughts??

Just don't eat as much. No special diets necessary to lose weight. You could even eat only twinkies and never exercise as long as your metabolism used more cals than you take in. Weigh yourself weekly to check your progress and adjust your food intake as necessary to match your weight loss goal

John, about 7 years ago I weighed 286 lbs. My sugar was off of the charts. I did the no carb thing and lost 70 lbs. fairly quickly. I grill the lean meat that I eat, no soda, beer, chips, bread etc. I've kept the weight off for several years now. As of today I weigh 215 lbs.

With my body, it takes a special diet to jump start things...this isn't my first rodeo.

Have you tried what I suggest? You dont even necessarily have to count calories, just weigh in weekly and adjust you diet. Whether its your body or anyone else's, everyone's body operates the same way. You can just start by eating 3/4 or 1/2 of what you normally eat depending on how much food you actually eat. Cutting out booze and non-diet soda will help too. Those caveman diets probably work because you feel fuller from eating a lot of proteins and greens than you do from breads and pastas, so you eat less.

I'd say first off take a look at what your favorite go-to foods (especially snacks) are. They are the most likely culprits. Banish them. 86ing a food item is far easier than "cutting down". Ever try to "cut down" on smoking? It flat doesn't work.
Look up South Beach Diet. The first 2 weeks are a bear but you'll shed pounds. I was about 20 pounds over normal, 200 vs. 180, and I lost 30lbs. in 6 weeks. Otherwise, do some studying on the glycemic index and start getting rid of high glycemic foods. If it's in a box, you probably shouldn't eat it with the exception of high fiber cereal. Do NOT start eating "fat free" replacement type processed foods. I've kept the weight off.

Follow Michael Pollan's advice: Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants.

Oh yeah, and if you drink, cut out beer and switch to distilled spirits and dry red wine, which still contain calories but no carbohydrates and won't spike your blood sugar. I can quit beer for two weeks and drop 5 pounds with no other changes. Think I'll have a whiskey now.

Cut out beer , sugar and minimize bread. Amazing what just doing that can do for you.

The Paleo diet is simple and easy to follow...since I usually eat only one meal a day.

Drink plenty of water, snack on unsalted nuts and seeds, eat the occasional fresh fruit, then eat till full at night. It looks rather simple.

The crux of the diet is to get back to the way people used to eat. if you can't kill it, catch it or grow it, don't eat it. Anything processed is out. That means no breads, pasta, etc.

Our ancestors used to eat a little during the day and hunt for the big meal for the evening meal, where they would eat heartily.

What it does is shrinks your stomach back to fist size and force your body to survive off of the fat stored in your body.

Beer and liquor are easy to cut out, as I don't drink them much...just the occasional beer, maybe once every two weeks or so.

Sugar intake would be limited to fresh fruits.

I didn't pack these pounds on by eating...the medications changed the way I metabolized the foods, causing the weight gain. It's a very common side effect of the medications I was on, but no longer take.

In the last week, I lost 10 pounds...just by getting the chemicals out of my body. Most of that was water weight. Since getting rid of the meds, I've pissed most of that weight out...and the exercise I've gotten by running up and down the step to the bathroom is rebuilding my legs. All I'm wanting to do is jump start my body and shed it off quicker.

Since those first 10 pounds have left me, I can feel the skin on my lower back jiggle, my ankles are defined again, and I can see veins on my feet. My wife told me that the loss was very noticeable to her, which is why I want to lose more of it.

She's wanting to start this diet with me as well, since she's gained weight staying home caring for me.

It' worth trying...

I did my own version of paleo, just upped the protein (mainly from beef, chicken, tuna and yogurt) and cut out most carbs. I've lost about 20 lbs in 10 months. I wasn't much overweight to begin however. I upped my strength training a little and kept cardio the same. It's a "diet" I can stick with too, a little more tweaking and I could lose another 5 lbs, but I'd be getting real skinny.

An old Preacher friend of mine told me to drink 2-12oz. glasses of ice cold water before every mean, to this day I still do that. Since I don't drink beer any more, I probably drink a gallon + of water daily.

I've increased my water intake, trying to expel the chemicals from my body quicker. I've cut out sodas and high fructose corn syrup from my diet. I drink iced tea with sugar, about a half gallon per day, and drink about a gallon of water each day. I won't give up my coffee, which I drink black, no sugar...it's my only means of waking up in the morning and getting going each day.

I've increased my activity, and ride the CardioRider for an hour a day, once in the morning and again in the evening.

I ignore the doctor's charts, because they say I should weigh about 175...that's impossible for me, as I have a VERY broad chest (think size 55 sports coat) even when I way less than I do now. If I were to get that low in weight, I'd be skin and bones with no muscle.

I'm at my best when I weigh about 220. At that weight, I have a 34 waist. I'm not interested in rock hard abs, never really have been.

I'm was about 20 pounds over that mark when I started the medications. i gained a bit over 50 since then. A total of 80 pounds to lose is my goal, and I hope to get there within 12 months.

From what I've read, and what my chiropractor has witnessed, I should be able to reach that goal, just by the diet alone. Add in the cardio and walking, then is should be real easy to hit.

If you are working outside in the sun, be careful with the Iced Tea. The tea can dehydrate you.
