I don't know of alternatives.

But other than paypal really sticking it to sellers, I think they're pretty good for buyers. Had a couple issues with sellers that paypal resolved.

Not so good for sellers.

Good instincts. Paypal are infamous for stealing money, and not just from Wikileaks. There is an ongoing class-action. Zepeda v. PayPal

OK

Thanks.

I got a re-loadable card for use on paypal.

That should limit exposure.

Which is why I take VISA. I'm already paying for it so why would I go to Pay Pal.
It's become the norm that people expect transactions by pay pal because they've become so used to ebay and internet shopping. When I say that I take VISA almost everyone has that card and I've had few if any problems.
There are still places out there that are old school and don't even use computors. Internet comerce is faster but not always better.

I will be interested in how this works. I wondered if it would be a good approach. Are there fees for every transaction?

I have been using a card paid from a separate account and periodically reporting it lost or stolen. This was a path of least resistance approach, careless actually. The card gets processed by Paypal when I pay. I click a link that says I have no Paypal account.

I had a card at one time that let me generate one-use card numbers. Never used the feature, might be nice now.

I setup a paypal account.

I only pre-load what is needed, and keep $5.00 USD on the card to keep it active.

No limit to what I can load.

Er I think "they" can still "get" you unless you've found a way of being someone with a bank account who doesn't exist I don't see how you can transfer funds with out having the standard agreement...

...which (if I've understood correctly) will mean that in the event of a dispute they will make your paypal account overdrawn and charge you for the priviledge.

EDIT

Hang about - have you got a disposable credit card? I think you can get those in the USA right? They don't exist here - we have disposable mobile telephones but not disposable credit cards...

...is that how you've got around it all? So in the event of a dispute you disappear into the ether? Warning - I think ebay and paypal share information so they'll have your postal adress. Start calling yourself Mrs Gunto Gwanmba (from Nigeria)...

The card is prepaid in cash, not attached to any account in my name.

I just went over my 1000 transaction with Pay Pal and its been a good ride. I use GE Capitol to Fund Pay Pal - they keep each other in check.

Yeah, I've never had even the slightest bit of PayPal trouble as a buyer, but have never experienced their MO from the seller side.

I have never had any problem with Paypal until the user agreement that said they are both a bank and a taxing authority and I was their serf. I refused.

It was an easy deal to buy on eBay and pay with Paypal. Then the shipping costs went stupid high and Paypal wanted to keep both hands in my pockets.

I have had very few issues with sellers or buyers on eBay. I have had a hundred or transactions in just the last couple months. Some used stuff is oversold and I don't like all of the new "made in china" junk.

They made it so that you can pay multiple auctions with one payment, much easier but the seller has to wait for payment now. I was paying at the end of the auction when I was using my Paypal account. Paypal paid right out of my bank account. Now I use the card for the same account.

They also have a shopping cart now but it has some stupid features and I don't use it. It probably has some good features but I am not looking.

Programming at eBay has gotten sloppy. It is a little scary. I suspect that they are in over their heads at this point.

Paypal *is* EBay, or rather EBay owns Paypal.
