A good chance she could have wrestled with him successfully enough to live while loudly calling for help, perhaps sustaining a few cuts. One can fight on with a cut or two short of a lucky slash to the neck, or a full on stab in the chest. You pick up a chair and prevent that.
The gun enabled his weenie ass to utterly dispatch anyone who came at him, short of 20 people rushing him at once which didn't happen and is unlikely to happen.
All due respects all, the 'knife' argument is way past tired.

By golly, I'm impressed! So much psychology, so few facts!
Here are some facts that might be fun for you to consider:
8% of violent crimes are committed with firearms (not broken down by type -- too bad).
6% by knife (not broken down by type -- too bad).
7% by blunt objects (not broken down by type -- too bad).
73% by NO WEAPON
Apparently people really do use their giant penis extenders to commit violent crime more than they use either guns or knives.
