Actually, you'd be surprised at the number of hunters and other gun owners that would agree to a small tax on ammunition or firearms sales, provided that the money would actually go to a program that insures this is taught. States already increased costs for range pass sales to help pay for range time, why not at a tax on that to go for the education as well?? I'm not talking about Billions of dollars here...just a few million to print posters to be hung in classrooms and the like.

Having those posters there would be a constant reminder to the students that they would see daily.

If you wanted to ramp it up to include a course on gun safety in the schools, then find a way to provide Federally operated ranges open to the public, and use revenue from that to fund those classes.

Ok, small tax on ammo sounds reasonable. Maybe also a small tax to pay for all the damage bullets cause, like with cigarettes. I'm sure hospitals would like to recoupe some of that.

Sometimes people who have a weapon get themselves into trouble because of false courage inspired by the gun.

A local contractor who I know well and have worked with for years has a son who has always been a bit flakey. He got a divorce and about the same time got a Concealed carry permit.

One evening he was in a bar and got into an arguement with the bouncer. The bouncer dragged him outside and (I am told) started choking him. Fearing for his life (I am told) he drew his gun. Fortunately he did not shoot the bouncer but the bar pressed charges and the flakey son actually went to jail for pulling his gun (I am told) on the bouncer.

Poor judgement + alcohol + gun = a bad result for my friends flakey son.

The son has some kids too.

My friend the contractor is as good as they come, hardworking, honest and skilled, but he has had very bad luck with his kids. This one in jail, a daughter who OD'd too.

Very sad.

Yes, the decision to carry a gun for personal protection is a VERY serious one! Even someone who is EXTREMELY proficient with the gun, but has never been put in the rare situation of having to defend someone or himself with it for real, NEVER knows if they will actually be able to do so until the time comes. It might very well end up getting them deeper into a bad situation. If the time comes they will freeze and pee their pants or be able to think and possibly save themselves and others.

Watered down laws are rarely effective. The current gun laws do not. They are ineffective and watered down. They allow anyone to buy a gun no questions asked. A law outlawing that would have an effect. Laws that allow such transactions are ineffective.
