Here in MA people used to cut the inspection sticker from the windshield when they had a car that couldn't pass the annual inspection. You'd come back to your car and have a nice hole right thru the glass.

For the plate-NY has a 2-up requirement. Can you get a plate frame to make it look okay? I'd go that route.
NY does not have stickers, so they won't be looking for that.

ill be making the crossing from NH, my destination is Quebec city above.

I suppose if I made a steel or plastic backing, and painted it the approximate color of the plate, that could work with a nice surround. Of course, its going to be mid feb, so with any luck with winter weather, the front of the car will still look like this, and the plate might be unreadable anyway.

I've actually been pleasantly surprised at NJ finally getting out of the inspection business. They essentially check for emissions from the tail pipe and the fuel cap and nothing else anymore.

I got them though...for a while I was driving a Lumina with a hole in the gas filler pipe. If you stood near the rear of the car, you clearly smell gasoline. If you filled the tank, some would overflow out of the pipe.
I always passed emissions/gas cap with that, as they only checked the cap.

I'd say most people are driving OBDII + cars these days. I'm one of the rare ones. Wife's car is OBDII, but that's it.

I don't know -- I think there's a public interest in people having lights, wipers, horn, brakes working, and not driving around on bald tires. I lived in NJ for a long time and I don't recall the safety inspection as being very burdensome. Not as if they unbolted wheels to check pads and steering parts like in NY.

Smile, be nice, and revel in their discomfort. They may be obnoxious, but they're also lazy and may not be bothered.

ive been over the border many times, but the most recent time (2 years ago now) is the time I had a huge delay. It all seems ridiculous now, but at the time, I was at a conference in Toronto, and a business partner was going to join, and had taken the train to buffalo. My plan was to cruise down a couple hours, pick him up, and head back.

This trip would have two border crossings obviously, as the train station was in buffalo. A cousin of my friend joined for the drive down just for company and to chat cars. Was having a grand old time, but upon getting to the border, all hell broke loose.
My passenger, who I had just met earlier that day, was a Canadian resident alien, is of Indian decent and dark complexion, and had long black hair, pretty much looked like the standard terrorist stereotype. He was also wearing a black shirt, and they went ape shlt when I tried to get into the states with my passenger for 15 minutes to meet a train, then hop back into Canada.

They just could not believe our story, whisked him away for private questioning for 45 minutes, went over the rental car several times, and were pissed that I found the whole situation amusing and was laughing most of the time at the predicament we had placed outselves in. We were hours late to the train, and they would not let him in the country. I had to pick him up on the way back

I will probably keep the car reasonably clean, just in case my license is flagged from the prior incident.

If it's flagged, they'll search you anyway. Why make it any more pleasant for the mouth breathing bigots? You're not their cleaning lady. Be perfectly nice, but smile internally at their discomfort.

Gonna be a long weekend, don't want to tote a mountain of crap up there with my bags. Just the basic repair tools, and snow/ice gear. Car should be easy to search if they are inclined, and ill be on my way quick.

Side note, I hate two plates. I'm glad fl doesn't have them, the front plate really ruined the lines of some cars.

When I move back to Ohio, I'm going to have to get the front license plate frame for the Tahoe...an item that isn't needed in PA. I'm hoping that I can get one for just a few bucks from the junkyard.

However, once there, I won't have to worry about inspections and emission checks anymore. They did away with that a number of years ago, after about 10-15 years of e-check. What a waste that was...if I had a vehicle that wouldn't pass, I'd take it to a certain place, and give them $20 for a guaranteed pass. They would fudge the numbers for a bribe, and pass the car.

I have a German plate you could borrow to put on the front as a vanity plate.
Bet that would help....

I would likely just take it off if I couldn't find a frame which would cover the cut out. Wouldn't imagine that border guards would be up to speed on which states require front plates.

This idea worked perfectly, I rolled the whole bottom of the plate up under a bit, and made it look like a very convincing chin strike and it was totally invisible.

Went through the border with flying colors, though both ways the crossing guards demanded I shut the car off.

wouldn't they issue you a pair of plates if you register in Ohio? missing one plate is better than a random front plate IMO. That might raise questions that are hard to answer, plus who knows what the history is on that yard plate.

I think he means the mounting frame, not the actual plate
