My 93 Suburban would go nearly 800 miles. Had a 46 gallon factory tank.

Breaking news!
Diesel more efficient than hybrid on an all highway trip. Now let's see the a comparison in real world city driving and bumper to bumper traffic.

I like how they avoided driving through San Francisco or any other part of the bay area that might have traffic. They took the 280 instead of the 101 through the peninsula again to avoid real world traffic, bypassed the east bay, McArthur maze and the bay shore. You know, all the roads normal people use to get from point A to point B in the Bay Area. This trip reads like a list of the least busy roads in the Bay Area and Central Valley. They might as well be driving on the moon.

Some comparison test

Just priced one. White on black MB-Tex. $0 sport package. No options. $52,000. Still can get MB-Tex - that's awesome. Love the range. I got my 2013 Suburban in the 2500 variety so I could get the 39 gallon tank - 600+ highway miles on a tank. Love it.

Whats there to love about 600 miles on 39 gallons? That's barely 15.5 mpg!

Of course, the Prius is much cheaper to fill up -- RUG v. Diesel.

Cool, that's how I want to live. So the E 250 is made for me.

I much prefer the E250, but this is such a strange test with so many variables. It sort of proves they are both good economy cars. They are so different in so many ways I don't see how you could begin to directly compare them, let alone determine a winner.

On the article, the Mercedes sort of won, but not really. It consumed a smaller volume of fuel than the Prius. But because diesel is more energy dense than petrol, the Mercedes used more energy. And of course it would cost a couple bucks more to buy 10 gallons of diesel than 10 gallons of regular. Still, the efficiency combined with the performance and comfort is very impressive.

Yes, my '96 W210 had a large fuel tank and could knock out about 33MPG on the highway as I recall. I topped off the tank one time in Richardson and easily rolled into El Paso with no refuel. About a 650 mile drive. I had to stop to eat, but no need for fuel.

It is nice to see MB entering the arena of vehicles that have exceptionally low fuel consumption.

They appear to offer the same or similar drive line on the GLK 250 Blue Tec which gets a stated 33/24 but I didn’t see an E class wagon with the 2.5 drive train.

By comparison to the new e class, a local dealer is offering an ’06 320 CDI with 85K on the clock, that gets a reported 36 MPG hiway for about $17.5 That’s probably indicative of what the next few years will do to the cost of the new edition.

2.1L

Between these 2 cars, I would rather drive the Prius. Its a known quantity with a reputation for reliability. The 2.1L diesel not so much. Who knows how many emissions tweaks MB had to throw at it to meet US standards. You really want to risk fixing that nightmare out of warranty? I didn't think so. We all know the horror stories about the OM642 that came before it.

They pretty much "have to" given really tough European and coming US CAFE standards. V8 gassers are likely to be disappearing from most model lines, to be replaced mostly by V6 and I4.
