Advice Requested on Ebay Transaction

I ordered a replacement LED turn signal for the right hand mirror of my vehicle from a seller on Ebay. Even though the label on the box matches the part number advertised, the part inside does not match the part I am replacing. The connector is different. The seller ground the part number off of the part he sold me, which indicates to me he purposely concealed the actual part number he sold. (Perhaps he thought the buyer would just accept the part and swap the connectors.)

I paid using Paypay. Should I try first to return the part to the seller for a full refund including return shipping costs or should I try to recover directly from Paypal? I don't use Ebay much.

Look up the returns link on Ebay. I'd contact the seller first, calmly. Hold negative feedback in abeyance in case you need to use it. Sellers are terrified of it these days. They can't leave negative feedback for buyers.

Communicate with the seller through eBay's "Contact Seller" so that eBay will have a copy of the communication.

I would recommend contacting the seller through Ebay and at the same time file a dispute through the Paypal Resolution Center. A dispute is the first level of resolving the issue through Paypal. If the seller does not respond (and from what you described I would be surprised if the seller responds), the second step would be to file a claim through Paypal.

The seller may have bought the part with the number already missing. They might not know of the issue. You do not know who removed the part number. Do not approach the seller with an accusing tone. The seller might think you swapped the part and are try to scam them.

Contact the seller first. Give him a chance to make it right. If not, just initiate the return thru eBay. eBay will FORCE the seller to take it back, and pay shipping both ways. There is no need to go through PayPal, and is not recommended as it is difficult for the seller to resolve it through the PayPal platform.

I am an anchor seller with almost 3,000 listings, about 20 shipments a day. If a buyer wants to return an item, whether I accept it or not, the seller can return it at my expense. I usually just pony up a full refund the moment they contact me and tell them to keep the item to avoid the ding to my seller rating.

Why not start off like two businessmen and contacting him and telling him whats up?

No need to start with threats or attempting to throw some kind of internet weight around. You have no reason to assume he won't work with you.

Also, companies who make parts for the original manufacturer, say Mercedes, often won't make a mold with and and without the 'genuine' part number. So they manufacturer grinds off the part number for parts sold in their own packaging. What you're assuming is foul play, may actually be an indication you were sold a genuine part.

Why do we jump to negative conclusions so quickly.

If the wrong part is in the Box it is the Sellers responsibility to know what he or she is selling.

Ebay claims a money back guarantee. If the item was not what you ordered it is easy to kick it back on the Seller.
You have a choice of contacting the seller first; which allows the seller to correct the problem without eBay penalizing them or you can file a claim. Once the Seller Emails you back you when you answer you can attach Photos to show the issue.

I did this about 1 month ago with a spark plug wire set that arrived with no Coil Wire. I my case I said the item was not as described and within a week all of my Money was refunded and I did not have to send the Wires back.

In my case I filed a claim without contacting the Seller first. The Seller answered back complaining about Customers that did that with out contacting him and I said it is because the buyers get frustrated with the sellers selling stuff that they don't inspect. He said he did not have time to inspect everything he sold. So I don't feel sorry at all for filing a claim.

I agree.
For sure you need to keep what ever anger, frustration and so on out of your correspondence. Keep everything factual and unemotional and un-dramatic.

Some eBay sellers don't know what they are selling. I bought some advertised as 100% cotton (which is what I wanted) bandannas and when I got them they were all polyester or something similar.

The Seller told me the company he bought them from told him they were 100% Cotton.

I don't know if that was the truth or not. But, it is the seller that has to take responsibility for his Ad.

There are liars, cheats, and people who are just plain misinformed on eBay. But there are also people like me and the anchor mogul who are good guys who are happy to make it right. The issue is some buyers assume everyone is the former, and attack from the jump.

I don't sell anything where I don't know what it is. Plenty do, I've bought junk from idiots on eBay before.

That all being said my last couple returns were eBay buyers who damaged the item during install then claimed it was my fault over 60 days after the item was delivered. So there are scam artists on both ends of the spectrum.

Then you come to this forum and "Sev" sends you a picture of perfect chrome and mails you a box of bent rust. So, buyer beware everywhere I suppose.
