Second that on the children sticking their little fingers into the food. During flu season, we can count on plenty of people coughing and hacking into the open buffet as well.
Cafeterias or sit down restaurants are more controlled but as anyone who has seen recent television episodes of either Gordan Ramsey (Hell's Kitchen) or John Taffer (Bar Rescue) can attest, some of these kitchens are down right GROSS!!!!! Think about it for a minute: the restrooms could be hospital clean, the floors, chairs and table cloths spotless but the kitchen is OUT-OF-SIGHT. Yes some cook out in the open in front of the guests but most restaurant kitchens are operated BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. I'll take a pass....... |

There used to be a tiny hole in the wall MiddleEastern place not far away, my brother talked me into trying it and it was rather good ~ the lunch buffet, I don't know any of their foods so I just tried what looked good .

Back in my college days, there was a small place (upscale) that had a happy hour once a week Probably Tuesday... with free taco bar. Quality stuff no limit. You didn't even really have to buy a drink, but they had specials. The owners were fab, as were all the clientele and staff. When we discovered the place as one of our once a week nutritional sources they welcomed us with open arms. Almost as if it was their intended purpose. Those were the days !

Buffets
The only buffet I have ever enjoyed was the Mandarin Buffet chain in Ontario province of Canada. It’s expensive, but kind of like dining at a fancy restaurant. They even come around with little rolled hot towels to cleanse your hands.

I have eaten at quite a few Casino buffets and some of them are VG. In the year we lived in Nv I packed on a few lbs-dozens of Casinos within 30 min-Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden, Lake Tahoe(both shores)
One of the Casinos had a sushi bar that was life changing

Oh yes ~ there's a fantastic Mexican place a few towns over that does this, only chimi changas and a couple other things are free though so I always order, my son will have dinner for 'free' and drink a few BIG beers .
I'm trying to remember the name of the Las Vegas casino buffet we had last Summer, it wasn't cheap but it sure was good .

Not big on them. I think 'all you can eat' is dangerous. Mediocre food and too much of it. What could go wrong.

A little hard to follow the last post. I guess it is a matter of taste.
Some years back when transiting down the east coast of America in the truck. A lot of places had switched over to buffet. Perhaps because of labor costs. Food was usually eatable but that was about it. I remember a friend with me on one trip overfilled their plate. I told him he may as well at least take some out to the dog in the truck. The owners here will not object. So he did. A Chinese buffet place in town got seriously fined. They were caught re introducing some peoples leftovers back into use. Another Chinese very large one that was not bad and seemed usually busy. In a small city nearby closed it's doors. Again it always seemed busy either when we were there or I just drove by. Over the years I have never really liked fast food places. Yet when travelling I on occasion consider then the safest places to eat when passing through smaller towns. I know I will not really enjoy it. At the same time I know to what extent I will feel that way. On occasion I will just ask a local. If there is a place with decent food there. Actually the wife is such a good cook. I prefer her cooking over almost anything commercial. We have a very large modern truck stop near the local town. Locals as well as ourselves use it periodically. The food is decent and of adequate Quantity. I hear the waitresses also do really well on tips. I believe this is a policy to lure the heavy truckers in. If so it appears to work. There is almost always a line waiting for tables and this place is a good size. |

It's no Golden Corral and it's not inexpensive but over the winter season the Langham Hotel located downtown on Franklin St. in Boston offers two of the best buffets you will ever attend in their Cafe` Fleuri.
They have a Saturday Chocolate Bar buffet, all you can eat of any of the 100+ chocolate desert preparations. if you know a chocolate lover they will never forget the experience. The food, the service, and the ambience are nothing short of impeccable. last time I was there it was $40 per adult. The other offering is their Sunday City Brunch, absolutely the unmatched in quality and the range of their menu offerings. All the traditional Sunday brunch items done exceptionally well, omelettes, carving station, Mimosas etc, but also full raw bar, a sushi chef, and for your desert the Chocolate Bar. If you go to the Langham's Sunday City Brunch web page there is a link you can click on to see the brunch sample menu. Brunch Buffet at Boston Luxury Hotel | The Langham, Boston $75 per adult, kids $40. Not something to do every weekend but once every year or two it's a fantastic treat. If you appreciate high end dining or maybe have friends or relatives that do; these buffets are unmatched and experiencing them will be much appreciated for years afterwards. They also have an Afternoon Tea with Wedgewood, an English tea time experience that women dream of. Bon Appetit Last edited by if6was9; 03-05-2019 at 09:51 PM. |
