Since I just got my 300CE, I'm set for awhile. But in the dream department is a pre-turbo 300CD with a 240D 4-speed dropped into it.

86-89 560SL, black with euro lights and bumpers, or a 70 or 71 280SE coupe, white or black.

I've seriously been considering a 560SEL. 3 criterion though would have to me met:

MUST be black with black leather

MUST be a '91

MUST be in PERFECT condition

Well...

A 1977 280SE Euro came up for sale in my parents's hometown.

127K documented miles, imported in 1988 by current owner, all paperwork and records.

$3200. I think I could give up my Volvo for close to that.

The only things that scare me away are gas mileage and M110 head problems.

Problems?? my M110 youngest engine is from '81 and still runs fine, i have had one engine blow a headgazket because of a leaking thermostat and the wire to the engine temp was broken.

on the 280 C(266.000 km original) the oil press is 1.5@ idle and goes to 3.0@2000 rpm

the 280 SE was rebuilt 70.000km ago and the oil press stays 2 @idle and 3.0@2000rpm.

the valves need to be adjusted every 15.000 miles but on higher milage engines im told valve clattering is a good thing because then you know for sure they valves are not burning.

the gas milage i get is about 15L-17L per 100 km on the 280 SE.

What problems did you have in mind?

I heard that the M110s loved to blow head-gaskets, pretty much. I already knew about the valve adjustment issues, etc.

Oh yeah, Eric, if it's the one on Sunset Highway in E-Wen (what I call where you live) that's the car.

Check it out, it is reportedly quite nice. All service records and stuff.

Most of what I've heard and read about the M110 engine has been good. They are noted for durability and longevity.

The M110 twin cam engine shared the same bottom end architecture of the 300 motor of 1951, but with modern cylinder head design and combustion technology.

I suppose its main weakness would be described as a lack of engine refinement. It can sound thrashy when ran hard, and even with low mileage, the engine can be a little obtrusive at speed.

oh- i almost forgott you (in the US) get a crappy version of it, right? My W126 has the 185 hp version and my 280C has the 154 carburettet one.

I like love that engine, the way it screams at high RPM, but it can be a gas guzzler i sometimes have to refill the tank once a week (90L@more than 1$ per liter) but i drive it very hard.

Don Ho,

The US M110 had a 140 hp fuel-injected M110.

However, this car is a Euro car, with the full 185 hp.

What kind of fuel economy did yours get? I heard M110s weren't too great on the mileage standpoint. Would an M110 engined car be capable of over 20 mpg on the highway?
