94 E320 Fan Clutch
car's been running warmer than normal lately...have taken several long trips in the past two months...coolant was low...flushed and refilled system...still running warmer than normal so checked fan with rolled up newspaper when car was running at 100F - fan stopped immediately so it appears clutch is bad...is there more to it than simply changing out the clutch? Thanks.

...do a search on 'fan clutch' there is lots of info.
You need to counter hold the bearing bracket and pulley from behind with a special tool (or the right sized allen wrench). the hole that you hold it from is in the rear of the bracket part and you insert the tool at about 1 or 2 o'clock (looking from the front of the car) between the two notches that can be seen looking down from the top. Also make sure your old fan blade fits your new clutch. A partly plugged radiator will cause the clutch not to work as well by not kicking off enough heat to activate the bi-metalic strip FWIW.

thanks...special tool or right sized allen wrench, uhmmm...se what I can come up with...any thoughts on the right size?
As a follow-up I ran the car warm again up to about 95F and had someone shut the car down while I watched for the fan to stop rotating (assuming if the clutch worked properly it would have been engaged) ...fan did not stop and windmilled to a stop several rotations later...any other way to determine operability of the clutch and eliminate rad problems?? |

You may also give strong consideration to cleaning out the A/C condensor. They can gather a lot of crud over the years. Good luck.

Edit:> is it covered with grease? How bot the radiator... covered with grese? ... could be leaking clutch fluid. I have only had mine off when the bearing bracket went and it basicly fell out of the car before disassembly... I am currently replacing a radiator (+ t-stat, hoses, and resealing the aux water pump) and resealing the upper timing chain cover (behind the distributor) and Valve cover gasket so I may be replacing mine shortly if it continues to not function...

Also, with the engine at 100C, you should be able to hear the fan pulling air when the engine is revved up. If you cannot hear this or feel a mass amount of air being pulled by the fan when the engine is 100C or over, then it probably needs a replacement.
First make sure the radiator is fully hot all the way through before you go changing the fan clutch.

Does the fan clutch make any unusual noises when it goes bad?
I've been hearing a whining noise as revs goes up. Don't believe it is transmission as that shifts fine and the noise stays around when revving the engine in neutral. The fan still spins when the clutch is bad, right? It just doesn't increase speed as needed? |
