opinion: 98 E320 177Kmiles, BUY or not to BUY
I'll go to see this car, everything should be working, was getting proper maintenance, regarding owner.
My question is: is this kind of mileage too HIGH, and i shall pass on this one, or it doesn't matter and car should still serve good with reasonable maintenance. In other words: buy if good, or not buy and pay more for simillar MB with half of miles....... Thank you ALOHA |

If it has been properly maintained and has service records, I'd buy it. 177k is not all that high....the condition of the car and how it was serviced over those miles is much more important.

My 98 E320 just turned 164K miles. Other than the harmonic balancer, spring perches, engine mounts, trans o-ring I have had good luck with it. If the trans fluid is original I would pass on the car and pay extra to get one with lower miles. I have also put in Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil and changed my trans fluid & filter long before Mercedes started to recommend it.

My 1997 E320 looks new, friends and coworkers compliment me all the time. They tend to think it's a 2002 or similar vintage. Then they get in and see the odometer - 177,000 miles or so - and are shocked. The paint and interior look NEW (except the driver's seat bottom). The engine and tranny function AS NEW. But it has been religiously maintained since day one, and I have a stack of receipts to prove it.

I would say if all things are equal...with 177K maybe $3K...maybe..you have understand you will be the final owner of this car.....

Pay for a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) by a MB-trained tech who is familiar with that vintage MB automobile so you're aware of any pending, expensive repairs. Even if the owner lacks detailed service records the tech should be able to tell if that 1998 E320 has been maintained properly, or not.

Two things that would concern me would be the engine and transmission. The M112 engine is good for many, many more miles if it has been serviced properly with Mobil 1. I may get slammed for this, but if its been changed with dino oil for 170K its probably gonna use a lot of oil - easily a quart every 1K if done by the FSS instead of 5K or less between changes. The other thing is the transmission - if it had its fluid changed with proper MB fluid at least once along the way (preferably by 100K) its probably OK. If its never been changed then you are near the end of the life cycle of the tranny and its not cheap. The car is somewhere probably between a decent car with another 100K service life with some diligent maintenance, to an absolute money pit if worst case.
