Unhappy motor wont turn!...?

(I warm my car every day at least 10 minutes before driving.) i stopped somewhere for about 2 hours and started the car up. I had been driving for 30 miles before that and didnt think i needed warm up time so i headed off. Down the road less than a mile, the car took more acceleration to get up to speed. It finally just died out and i pulled over. I tried to start it and it made the slow reving noise like when the battery is out of power. I thought it might be the alternator but when i got a jump, it still wouldnt start. I towed it home, charged battery, and checked all electrical. Everything was fine but it still would only 'click' and not start. so I decided to try to turn the engine (clockwise) with a wrench. Lo and behold, I coudn't turn the lower gear thingy. The belt will turn but it will squeek and slip off the lower gear as it's turning, so it's not that I'm not turning it hard enough. I checked the oil and WHOA, it's EMPTY? I changed the oil last month. I filled it up with a quart of 15W-40 and it still wont turn/start. Could anyone please tell me what's going on? I don't know what I did. The car was running very solid for the 2 months i've had it. I adjusted the valves recently, changed oil, changed filters, did other basic tune-up type things. Thanks for the help..

The crank case holds 7.9 quarts of oil. How can you fill it up with one quart?

If that engine was run empty, it's a good bet it's toast.

What gear thing are you turning? You should use a 27mm socket and breaker bar to turn the crank clock wise only.

Also what model and year is your car?

That's why I asked which car. The 617 holds 7.9 qts. I put the cart in front of the horse. Good catch there.

sounds bleak, but...

at least you enjoyed the time youve had with the car.

Hopefully it isn't the worst case of a siezed engine, but it sure sounds like it. These engines need alot of oil to run, and 1 quart is definately not enough to keep any engine alive, let alone these oil hungry beasts...

Best of luck though, maybe someone has an extra engine laying around, or your local junkyard has one that works...

oh, update your info so those of us who live near you can see what we can do to help, ya know?

Ben

Keep trying to start it... you never know.
Add more oil too. You are probably just refilling the empty lines and oil cooler. Best fill her all the way up so that all engine components can get full lubrication. These engines are very die hard and I wouldnt be surprised if it fired up again.

Is there a way to manually force oil into all of the little spots it needs? I will continue trying to start it until it works or i find a new engine. Thanks for all the advice.. I will keep this updated.

yea i meant that if u saw smoke coming out the exhaust when it was slowly dying. My father got a frozen engine running again after he ran it out of oil. however it had a horrible rod knock afterwards, and he just replaced the engine

I filled it up with a total of 2 quarts and then it was turning. I went to the store excitedly hoping that more oil would help it so now it has a total of 4 quarts and its not turning again. maybe when i get home, it will start turning again. I dont have internet at home so I have to ask as many questions as possible then go home and try the results.

Seconded. Check all fuel filters, look for air in clear pre-filter, check the air filter, charge the battery, check glow plug resistance, bring to a reputable diesel mechanic. Check the mechanic thread for good ones in your area.

If it's still turnin', then its still burnin'.
Good luck young padouan. May the Benz be with you.

Ben
