I see in your sig. that you have only driven the car about 600 miles since you got it home. I would seriously consider taking it on a road trip of some length before heading toward the South Pole. A weekend trip. 500 miles out and back on back roads. Load it down with as much weight as you think you will be carrying on your trip, maybe a little more. Top up all your fluids to gauge consumption over the 1000 mile trip.

I have driven two or three times that in the last month and a half! The odo did not work and now it is fixed... currently writing a blog entry with the complete route and a shakedown 300-mile trip.

Why do you need 3 valve cover gaskets? Just glue the one you have to the valve cover and be done with it.

Why a spare set of engine mounts? Do you enjoy doing difficult work on the road? Put them in before you leave!

Someone said a satellite phone but I would consider getting a COSPAS-SARSAT emergency radio beacon just in case you get stranded in a Chilean desert or something. Also bring along at least one water purifying device. Something with a replaceable filter cartridge preferably. Even the tap water there may not be safe for you to drink and obviously bottled water is not a cost or space effective item

Whatever critical items you have, if you plan to bring spares of them, might as well install the good (new) ones into your car, and keep the old "okay" parts as spares instead.

What's the condition of the radiator? What's the condition of the brake rotors? These items don't typically require spares, but if they're questionable, might as well replace with new.

If you'll bring a spare set of engine mounts, don't forget the transmission mount too. Are the flex discs in good order?

Agreed on getting the oil pan skid plate!!

Don't forget the usual emergency items like a shovel, tow rope, flares, a durable jack, a spare w/ new or good (and inflated) tires, and some tire repair kits (in case of a puncture). Make sure the battery is good and that you also carry an air compressor.

Good advice. Also, installing the new spare parts before you leave gives you an opportunity to learn how to do the repair while you've got all of your tools and are safe at home. Lying on your back in a ditch somewhere is not the time to discover a missing wrench. The more difficult the repair, the better to do it before you leave.

Consider snow tires (or similar) for their traction in rough terrain. This is a good time of year for them as everyone is bringing out their new production for the coming (north of the equator) winter. I just bought a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks for visits to snow country this winter. Date coded 2512, they are less than 2 months old.

Is this a one way or return trip? If return, take twice as many spares. Or ship a crate of spares to Ushuaia so you can restock before heading back

The previous owner replaced the cooling system, the braking system, the motor mounts and the alternator. I have a spare set of motor mounts René gave me, so I am just taking them for the sake of them being free.

In 20,000 miles, I'd like to adjust the valves at least once, and I will allow myself for two mistakes. That's why I am taking three valve cover gaskets.

I am definitely taking my "okay" spares with me! Currently piling up in a cardboard box in my bedroom . I will pull out the skid plate from Newport and install it in Livinstone.

Late to this party, but I honestly think you should have a paid off VISA and a MASTERCARD, and a way to get them paid.

This can come in really handy if you use them frugally and sparingly. And can pay off the balance,

Talk to your banker about it. They also need a general idea of your itinerary to work it out..

And as my dad said "Buen corazon trae buen fortuna..."

Exhaust hanger donuts

As far as the exhaust hanger donuts, I would suggest you replace them with the ones that have a wire molded into the rubber (I will look for the part #). At least replace all 4 with new, one being the one with the wire inside. Having at least one with the wire inside will keep the rest from breaking. Even with all new rubber donuts, you will be replacing them sometime on the trip...Rich

Exhaust hanger:

I would also suggest that you replace your primer pump (if you have not already) to the new style. Also add to your list: Nitrile gloves, fuel line, injector return line, air cleaner mounts.
