putting 722.3xxx trans from 126 to 123 and vice/versa

ok... we've all heard that you can swap the trans by trading tail covers, and the speedo drive assembly...

not exactly...

see that little plastic tube that is connected to an oil feed line towards the bottom of the tail cone?

this is what the 126 tail cone looks like (yeah i know... grody trans!!!)
notice that not only is there no plastic tube, there is no place to put one.
SO... me thinks that you can make a 123 trans work in a 126, because the 126 does not need the oil for the speedo... but you'd likely have to plug the hole for the oil feed...

but there is no way to make it work the other way... it looks like the 123 NEEDS the lubrication to the speedo gears... without it the plastic would likely fail rapidly.

all the bolts removed from the tail cover.

a NICE shiny new lock nut!

a 123 parking pawl. notice the shims on the shaft... don't mix them up!

I tried that once, and it did not seem to work. I tried to put an '85 300D trans in an '81 126. If I remember correctly, the tail cone mounting flange was totally different (bolt holed not lined up). The car still does not have a working speedo to this day. I was going to hook up the speed sensor like mach4 did on his 300SL-D project, but the guy that bought the car did not care if the speedo did not work.
[edit] I just looked at the thread title and realized that you are talking the same model trans in 2 different chassis'. I think the '85 was a 722.4, and the '81 was a 722.3. That might have been the difference.

Glad someone else has found this to be a myth.

A few months back, I was ready to have a w126 trans delivered, for me to change over the tailshaft housing and use it in my w123 300td.

I happened to call my local indy manager to jaw about it, just prior. He was really skeptical, but I told him we had folks on this list who claimed it had been done.

While we were chatting, he pulled up the parts diagrams on both and said "no way that will work." He emailed them to me and I had to agree.
