Over the weekend I found out what a weak chain tensioner can do to a guide in a 617. Seems the chain slapped it around pretty bad and egged out the bottom hole on the guide, giving it lots of side play. The engine has 272k on it with no record of timing chain being replaced( got all service records from original owner), so new chain is in, still waiting on tensioner and bearing bolt for the guide.

driving home from work today, my 300sd began acting sort of like the primary fuel filter was clogged. i limped the rest of the way home and after dinner got to work on the ol' gal. since i have a glass primary fuel filter, i could see that it wasn't fully clogged yet. hmmm. well, anyway, i look down in the area behind the driver side headlight and notice a random E-clip tucked under wire bundles. i pick it up and place it aside thinking i might need that some day. ha. a few seconds later, i look up and notice the throttle linkage looks a bit funny. it was coming apart because it was missing a E-clip. talk about some crazy luck, the E-clip i just found was the correct size. NO, there is absolutely no way the E-clip could have fallen off and ended up where i found this one. total luck all the way around, since all the hardware stores in my area had already closed for the evening.
while i was messing with the linkages, i found that while the go pedal was to the floor, the ip throttle wasn't max throttle. adjusted it and went for a test drive. yummy more acceleration. tldr: got lucky with throttle linkage failure and subsequent repair and adjustment.

Since we are leaving a week from tomarrow to head up to Portland, Or, about 740 miles. I decided I better get busy and check thing over on the 240.
Removed the VC and checked the valves, all good. Noticed #3 injector looked wet. Dang return line was weeping, HMMM.... just replaced them about a yr ago. so I keep about 4ft of return line in a freezer bag in the trunk, along with light bulbs, fuses, Razor Blade knife, dykes, 22mm open end for the secondary filter, a bag of nitrial gloves etc... Freezer bags keep thing from getting wet in the trunk. Whip out the new return line, and replaced the leaker. all others were dry. then shoved a rag below the Injector and gave it a shot of carb spray cleaner. rag to catch the mess. While the VC was off, washed it in a pan of gas, then blew it out with carb spray cleaner and let air dry. did the same to the oil cap. Washed up the gasket in the pan of gas, blew it out with the carb cleaner. Spent about 30min with some metal polish and gave the VC a once over to make it all pretty. also polished up the aluminum air filter lid. Wiped the oil off the head, then using alcohol wiped it real good to get it squeeky clean, also the VC edge too and the gasket. Put the gasket on, dropped the cover on and tightened her down. The 80 240D has a rubber piece vulcanized to the stop lever the horizonal rod from the firewall connects to. think it is probably a vibration dampner. well after 31 years the rubber came apart and it fell apart. so I have had it Zip tied for a while looking through the yards for another one. Check with a dealer in Reno, NV. they quoted me $365 no friggin way. I pulled an engine out of a 80 300SD a few weeks back. well what do you know? it has the exact lever I need. got her mounted on the 240 and we are like new. I paid $468 for the complete engine, and subtracting $365 for the lever, the engine only cost me $103. Charlie

I just figured out the transmission flaring issue on my 80 300cd. It's a 722.118 '4 bolt' transmission, which is influenced by a vacuum modulator & vacuum control valve.
After confirming the trans fluid wasn't low, I used a Harbor Freight oil pressure tester kit to set the mod. pressure to the factory reading. The modulator pressure port bolt is M8 * 1.0, some people grab junkyard banjo bolts but buying the kit is easy. The car would bang into gear with VCV disconnected, so fortunately the flaring wasn't internal (not that a 150k mile 33 year old transmission couldn't use a rebuild anyway.) With the VCV set to 10" at idle from 15", shifting is now on-time and crisp. Add a new transmission filter, cooler hoses & 6qt fluid change, and it's good to go! Useful information is out there on MB transmissions, but nothing like a cohesive idiot-proof writeup... you'll have to sift through about 20 pages of intense discussion on vacuum orfices. |

Finally got the 300td into the paint booth. It was a nine hour job but well worth it.
here are some pics. The color is not quite right in the pics. She is now Mercedes cactus green. (pulled a stock color code from the cars year.) The day i bought the car. Primed and prepped getting taped off. Base Coat. Clear Coat. (first coat i think.) Fresh out the booth after baking for an hour. I didn't take a picture of the sealer stage. There as also about a year of bodywork between pic 1 and 2. Now i must wait a week and start to reinstall every thing that has been pulled. Not before is cleen and polish everything.

I am going to take the steel wheels off my 240d and paint the caps to match. might also paint the new grill slats to match. (the guy i got the grill from painted them black)

Well, not today, but last week - prepped my '84 Euro TD for it's first major outing this year - to Bill Lightfoot's vintage-car/Pagoda GTG at his estate in Vienna.
First I yanked the crappy PO-installed Asian Blaupunkt with it's aggravating tiny buttons, Vegas-at-Midnite jukebox-display, and unreliable CD-player. Swapped in an older Blaupunkt cassette-radio that used to be in my old 240D - larger buttons, simple dial. Then wired it to work without the key. (Had no effect on my clock - it still only works after the outside temp gets above about 50 degrees!) Changed the fuel-filters, checked most of the fluids, washed the car, and cleaned out much of the excess clutter in the back seat & cargo-bay. then installed the factory roof-rack bars. Finally checked the tires just before I left. Car ran well on it's Beltway & Rt-66 outing to the GTG, and I had a great time there. This was the shakedown cruise to prep for my Virginia Beach trip next week. Still need to check the 5-speed tranny-fliud, flex-discs and exhaust hangers before I go. Happy Motoring, Mark

Fixed up the euro 560sel project i bought to convert to a diesel.
Replaced a few of the missing parts power seat switches,trim, headlights etc...

Put in a new Condensor.
Bonus for us few 1987 300D owners, you DO NOT have to remove the radiator! I removed the fan and shroud. Then unclipped the radiator. Removed the lines from the condenser, unclipped the condenser. Pushed the rad back, out with the old, in with the new. total time, 30 min. Now to get the system recharged!

I did a valve adjustment on my wife's SD, changed the oil, bled the brakes to change
the fluid. Glued up some delamintaed wood, took apart BOTH door handles to see if I can swap out a no longer functioning drivers door lock, with the passenger side lock. Welded the air cleaner bracket that had cracked all over. Added some reinforcement. Tomorrow I'm going to weld the driveshaft bearing carrier bracket, as it has a crack starting. Inspected boots. Darn,getting some cracks. I don't know if I want to face boot replacement. Perhaps I'll pay an indie.
