AC Compressor Replacement

Anyone care to comment on a good place to get a NEW R4 compressor. Mine's toasted, and I'll be switching it back to R12.

Thanks,

Jon

CompressorWorx has the license to the design now and is making them new in Dallas, TX.

I would suggest that you take a look at replacing the R4 with a Sanden. There are lots of reasons to go with a current technology compressor. Do a search on "Sanden" on this forum and you'll find lots of information and discussion. You may decided to stay with the R4 but at least it will be an informed decision based on all the options not just a default decision.

Related question - R12 and Sanden work OK?

Not meaning to hijack your original question, but it is very much related...

Does the Sanden work well with R12?

I have been reading about the converstion kits for the Sanden, but I don't recall what type of freon they were going to be using.

The Sandens should use 134a

The newer Sandens are built to withstand the higher pressures of 134a so they will work with R12 just fine. Even the old ones that were built for R12 did OK with R134a.

The only real difference nowadays is the oil that is shipped with the new compressors (and model numbers). They are shipped with oil for 134a, so you will need to drain and replace the oil if you are going to run R-12. However, there may be someone out there that has an NOS Sanden model with oil for R-12. From the Sanden website:
Due to low demand, Sanden has discontinued R-12 models. This includes the following R-12 compressor series (SD505, SD507, SD508, SD509, SD510, SD708, SD709, TR70, TRF90, and TRF105).

Here is a good You Tube video changing the oil in a Sanden Compressor when changing between R-12 and 134A.
