Question 81 300d engine swap into a 83 240d engine shock qs and wiring

I recently decided to swap my sluggish 240d engine and tranny for the turbo 300d. All was going well and lining up. I changed the drive shaft, rear differential, new bushings, new mounts, ect. Currently the 300d engine is sitting in the the 240d chassis and everything is lined up but I discovered that unlike the 300d the engine only has 1 engine shock/damperer as opposed to 2. Is it worth the time to weld the second one on there? And the one that is on there is about an inch short so I had to use the top piece from the 240d in order to connect it to the chassis. Should I take the time to install an additional engine shock? Also, I can't find the tachometer wiring harness, I can see it where the instrument cluster is but it's in such a wad I can't pull it out or knife it out rather. Is there a harness I can buy, or is there a simple way to trace it? I really need help with the engine shocks I really want this beast out of my grade and out on the open roads.

Am doing the research on a similar swap. The short answer on the engine shock question would be "if you can tolerate the vibration at low engine RPM w/o it, then you don't need it".

In other words, proceed without it and decide later.

For the tach, take a look at this longer thread... New 240D (with 617 swap) owner checking in

Since your 240D is a 83, it has an EGR. behind the passenger side kick panel (to the right of their feet) is a small black box. this is only to control the EGR function.

Funola in this thread was able to jump across a couple of the solder connections to make a Tach work in his 240D.

DIY tach for 240D w EGR- easy!

There is a cable that runs from this box, over to the drivers side, through the firewall and down to the Crank for the revolutions pick up.

There is a Switch Over valve on the Pass side inner fender to control the EGR function. a black/purple stripe wire runs to this from the box. this can be eliminated.

The functions of the small engine shocks as far as I have read, is to help stop the shake when the engine is shut down, to take the stress off the engine mounts.
You could cut off the tab mount from the donor car, or cut a piece of angle iron, and have a Welder stick it on.

Just noticed this is your first Post. Welcome to the Forum.

Were it me, I would replace the engine in the 240 with the proper engine, and then sell it and look for a real 123 turbo diesel. You will end up with an altered vehicle that will have virtually no resale value above scrap price.

Resale may not be a concern to him. I recently bought an 83 240d with thoughts of putting a 617 turbo engine in it. I like the simplicity of the manual windows and tranny, and cooling and heating system, but the power and economy of the turbo engine. When I am to the point I can no longer drive, I don't care what the resale value is!

WK

Depends on the condition as to the value of the car on resale. a pristeen vehicle, might be best to keep it all stock, then the resale to a MB enthusiasts would be higher.

One that has been down the road a time or two and shows the miles and some rust would not be worth as much to start with. so not keeping it as it came from the factory probably would really not make much difference is it wasn`t all original.

To some people a swap would keep them away, and others it wouldn`t make much difference.

Our original poster hasn`t been back. guess the lack of a response for a few weeks, he moved on.

Walter K, welcome to the Forum.
Pacific NW, I just came home from there (Portland) yesterday afternoon.
