Another trip in the old 240D

Well guys, the old 80 240D is going on another trip, this time to Long Beach, Ca., that`s near Los Angeles. so I guess about 500 miles or so.

Iam going to a Ships Reunion for the Navy ship I was on from 63 - 66, an old WWII Destroyer. this is the first one Iam going to, to see people I don`t know from before I was on and after, and hopefully some when I server on her.

The ship is the U.S.S. Lyman K. Swenson DD-729. here are some pictures I found on Google Images.
https://www.google.com/search?q=uss+lyman+k+swenson&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=T2lEUobzO-itiALT1YDQDw&sqi=2&ved=0CDkQsAQ&biw=931&bih=518&dpr=1

So I have the 240 all oiled up, fueled up, polished, air checked etc... and we are off heading down I-5 over the Grape Vine. probably fuel up at the Flying J at La Beck or is it fraiser Park? they are close, can`t remember. that should get me into the L.A area and out. be leaving there on Sunday for home. So if you see an Ivory 240 heading south that might be us.

I know these old cars are refered to as Hobby cars and not reliable etc... HMMM well this is out DD and right up there into the high end of 356K. they go a Million miles right?

Hope I can find a computer when we are there....OH we are staying on the Queen Marry. dang, hope I don`t get Sea Sick.

Have a great trip Charlie.

Take some pictures of the journey if you can (not of the drunken sailors of course!)

You'll do fine. I had the priviledge of following you on the MB run from Santa Monica to Lompoc, and I can attest that that your 240 is a great car.

I'll be leaving about the same time on a road trip to North Carolina in the diesel 107. I'm only at 225k to I've got to do some "big chunk" trips to try to catch up.

Hobby cars? Heck no, open road long distance cruisers.

Enjoy your reunion!

Hey Charlie,

I'll be in LA also this weekend. If our schedule permits, give me a call to meet up somewhere.

Btw, the Flying J is know as both being in Lebec and Fraizer Park. very confusing!

road trip pictures are always required.

Good luck! Staying on the Queen Mary! that sounds fun.
Are you going to do the ghosts and legends tour?

Enjoy the trip! Didn't know you were a target sailor. I guess I'm about ten years younger, retired from Navy submarines in 96.

Have a good time.

I'm sure the ship's store (Queen Mary) carries dramamine!

My old ship was cut up for scrap in '97. U.S.S. San Diego AFS-6.

Sumner class Destroyer. Kind of a little pocket battleship. When I was kid, I used to build models of these WWII ships. Only later did I get into cars.

Have fun.

Cheap Fuel

Hey Charlie,

Just a quick tip on fuel, if you have cash. Drive 32.5 miles past Lost Hills, Ca (on I-5 heading South), you'll see a very large green electronic sign for EZ Trip Shell on your left hand side. Take the Stockdale Hwy exit, turn left over the overpass and the station will be on your right. The diesel pumps are located behind the building so trucks can refill, use pump #25 which has the smaller size nozzle for the w123 fuel neck.

If you have Cash, this is cheapest place by far for the Central Valley I-5 stretch--I paid 4.03 on Monday.

Sounds like fun! I would not hesitate to take a well loved and well sorted 240 on a road trip at that mileage.

I remember when I bought my first maple yellow 240 it was less than ten years old but had about 190K on it. I bought it in Indy on Thursday and changed the oil and filters that night. Next day I took a trip that was about 700 miles one way to Peterborough to fish at Rice lake in Ontario. My wife gasped, you're taking that car you just bought? I said, heck yes. No problem. Set the cruise on 73 and hummed away.
