Hi Rich,

Before asking, I did stroll through the first handful of posts.

Does the kit mount up to the OM616 and OM617? In other words, interchangeability? I am guessing this has been asked before ...

Also, do you know of any other compressor which would mount up (other than #508)? I am looking for a compressor which has the serpentine belt pulley vs. the current double pulley which I think is standard.

Thanks in advance for probably answering redundant questions.

Yes it will work on the 616 and 617 as long as it had the R4. Earlier blocks with the York did not have the mounting for the R4/Sanden. I have serp belt pulleys available for all the compressors I sell, so you are in luck!

Wowza ... thanks for the super fast response. Another "dumb" question: Do you know if they sell the #508 already configured with the "K" back plate and serpentine pulley? (I think it's a "K" back plate. Mark

I am not sure if that combination is available, but I can make one up or sell you the parts if you can't find the exact configuration you need. I have heads and pulleys for both the 5 and 7 cyl compressors......Rich
EDIT: the 7 cyl takes a "KG" head, and the 5 is the "K" (both have rear port 3/4 & 7/8 Oring fittings)

The only issue I see (other than getting one configured) is making sure that the plane for the serpentine pulley lines up with the crank pulley and alternator pulley. Currently, one is guaranteed a line-up with the crank pulley and alternator pulley. [for my specific application, I do not need a PS or WP pulley].

The double pulley on the current A/C line-up really doesn't work with a double pulley system. If the current back plane of the AC serpentine pulley grove lines up with the crank pulley, then the serpentine system is an absolute go. That is the only issue for me currently.

The forward most groove of the Sanden lines up with the existing A/C belt pulley on the crank. I don't know if your system will allow the belt to line up with the serpentine pulley on the Sanden in its current position. I do have a double serp belt pulley that will bring the belt more rearward. It may or may not acomidate as wide of a belt as you need, I don't know. It might help to show a photo of the plane of the serp belt in relationship to the R4 compressor.

A serpentine belt set up on my OM617 similar to that on my OM603 would be awesome. Has anyone done this? Is it possible?

I believe it is. I caused to be made and successfully installed the very first double belt system on the OM617.912 engine. That was my initial R&D into pulley and allied issues. The sole issue right now is figuring out a way to make sure that the A/C will line up with the crank pulley and alternator pulley. Keep in mind, that my application is somewhat odd as I prefer the EWP vs. mechanical and no PS -- manual steering.

Read through this thread on installing a serpentine belt on a OM617.

It`s just time and money.

If anyone has the model number of the Sanden compressor that has been been being used with this kit please post it. I'm converting one and am going to need a compressor. I just installed one on a CD and took a pic of the compressor (that came with the kit) but did not focus on label to be able to read it.

I looked around on ebay and came accross this one. Does this look correct?

Here is a picture of the box. Ordered it off Sanden website. Cost ~$75 more than one from China.

I got the latest one I converted up and going yesterday with a brand new condenser fan running anytime the compressor is powered up. Kudos again to Rollguy for the high quality relay assembly. Anyway, I'm running the Sanden compressor/kit, 7 ounces of mineral oil and 2.9# r12 refrigerant on original condenser. It looks like it is slightly overcharged. At idle I'm showing 40 psi, rev it and it drops to 30-35 and hi side goes to (IIRC) 250# at 92dF ambient. I am not getting what I want at the dash vents. Site glass is clear on the dryer. The tag on the car calls for 2.9#. I'm going to evacuate what is there, vacuum and recharge with 2.5#. Will adjust as necessary to see if I can improve it's performance.

Let us know how it goes because I've just started a new job and will have $ to put into my wagon; this will be one of those approved items.

A note to anyone running R12 with a new Sanden, they come with oil for use with R134a. All the oil must be drained from the compressor through the fill hole, as well as the ports. Some tech's recommend using Ester oil, as it is compatible with both R12 & R134a. However, if the system was flushed well, and the compressor drained properly, any oil should be fine to use in the system.
