w123 hitch install
need to install my bumper mount hit for my 240D this week since a truck I was interested in was sold out from under me (thanks jerk seller for not responding to my calls trying to setup an early morning meet for me to buy and me being a teacher really doesnt allow me any free time to buy things)
anyways... anyone have any tips or tricks for installing one? I know I need grade 8 hardware but others have mentioned putting a plate in the spare tire well where the bolts go. |

YES.... there are several threads in the archives where people did a really SNAP UP job on this AND posted great instructions....
You DO NOT want the pressure on the actual bumper... due to the way it is constructed with regards to movement in a small accident....to build it correctly... ( according to me ) entails two pieces of metal bent to go around the outside and the inside of the spare tire cavity... and riveted together.. then you could weld to the outer one to go to your hitch. I am sure this is not what you wanted to hear.... a real pain to do it correctly ( according to me and the people in the archives who posted such good info ..)

That's a bit involved. I wish I could have found a euro hitch or if that was the style sold in the USA.

It is..... if it were not so involved to do it right .... mine would have one on it...
I keep dreaming of doing it though.....

Agreed to that! I want to install one on both my cars, but doing it correctly isn't easy....I finally decided I will just spend the bank the the oem euro one...but then I found out you can install a new wagon hitch on the rear of the sedan....though you need to re route the muffler....so this is going to be what I will be getting...

I was thinking about the euro hitch and rerouting the exhaust too. I got this hitch for $50 shipped

Jay, that one seems to attach to the frame... nice.... but they use the term ' TD ' ... I wonder how they are using that.... is that possibly for the wagon ?

I want a 2" receiver on my 126 to have a match with my other parts. I only intend to haul up to 4 bikes on a rack. Of course, someone would probably be stooopid enough to far exceed towing capacity which is why hitches for these cars have smaller receivers.

I put a class 2 on a 240 once, really simple setup ultimately. Consists of a piece of quarter inch steel with six holes in it that sandwiches between the bumper and body hard points.
Then i used some random junk yard hitch, really only the receiver square, and welded it to the quarter inch plate so it popped out right under the bumper. Some gussets and a few other strength areas, and job done. Unfortunately no pics of this arrangement, but it was pretty straightforward.

Even with the receiver on my truck, I can't count the number of times I have knocked my shin into the ball mount when it was inserted in the receiver. Still, it is better to be able to remove the ball when not in use....Rich

You can make a nice hitch very easily, but don't ever bolt it to the bumper it was designed to compress (shocks) and tear away (slide in mounts) if needed, bolting it to solid steel will stop those things from happening. My Audi had a great design, it mounted under the studs for the bumper shocks and had a thick cross tube that was behind the rebar, a vertical 2" receiver and special hitch mount that was 90 degree. It was strong enough to tow S class's on a tow dolly. I can supply pictures to give you the right idea, but never bolt it to the light weight bumper. It would work find on a w123 once designed for the shock mounts.
