Extractor tip for removing 606 prechambers

I ordered the splined socket from Pelican to remove the prechamber collars on the 606 head I am working on, and assumed that the extractor tip I have would work to pull the prechambers. Well guess what, it is too large (22mm). The 606 prechambers must take a smaller tool, and from my search, that tool is not available from Pelican or eBay. Anyone have an idea what size thread it is so I can make a puller? Or does anyone have one I could rent? I was hoping to get the head to the rebuilder this week, but that did not happen.....Rich

I have one in the garage, having done this job twice it is not something I relish.

The force needed to remove each one is incredible, it needs a very durable breaker bar with extension - I'll get some dimensions later.

"Breaker bar with the extension"? I already have the lock rings off using the splined socket, so no more need for a breaker bar. I do have a slide hammer for pulling the prechambers, but my "extractor tip" works on all the engines EXCEPT the 606........Rich

Be sure to remove the Glow Plugs before pulling the Prechambers or something is going to get damaged.

The 617 prechamber pullers have M22-1.0 threads

The later model Engines with angle injection and use the splined socket to remove the Prechamber Rings (and the Injectors screw directly into the top of the Prechamber) the prechamber pullers are M22-1.5 threads

So one is not larger then the other but the threads are different.

I have the extractor tip that I got from Pelican that has 1.0 and 1.5 threads, and it says it is for 601,602,603,605,615,616,and 617 engines. It does not list 606 as one of the engines, and neither end works in the prechambers.

I already removed the glow plugs and prechamber rings. Five came out super easy, one was not so easy. However, I was successful in the end.

Another 606 glow plug removal thread

Anyone have an extra 606 injector that I can buy? I will weld a nut that fits my slide hammer to the lower injector body to pull the prechambers.

The 606 is smaller than all the rest, or at least the one I am working on is smaller.

Sorry, I thought you were after the splined socket.

When you find the correct thread size please post it.

Just for reference I went over to samstag that sells expensive special tools and this is how they list the prechamber puller: "Klann KL-0369-4 Double Ended extractor tip. With M22x1 and M22x1.5 threads. Used to remove the pre-chamber from the diesel cylinder head. Engines OM 601, 602.91 /93 /94, 603.91 /93 /96 /97, 604, 605, 606, 615, 616, 617.91 /93 /95. Must be used with your slide hammer. This tool has M12 threads for a metric slide hammer. If you need a metric slide hammer ask for a Klann KL-0049-200 hammer with KL-0049-2008 adapter."

Note that it gives the thread sizes (one end of the tool is M22x1 and the other end of the tool has M22x1.5 Threads) does say it works for the 606.

Perhaps you need to wire brush out the carbon from the inside threads.

That's odd, as the Pelican Parts listing for the tool I have omits the 606. It is the same tool available everywhere that has the 22mm X1 &1.5. I will measure the injectors and compare with a 617 prechamber.......Rich

Mystery solved.

I got to thinking about it, and I compared a 606 injector with a 617 prechamber. The 606 injector would not screw in because of the thread pitch, but would have if the thread pitch were the same. That told me that my extractor tip must have a problem. Upon close examination, I found the threads on the end a little buggered up. A small file on the threads, and it screwed into the 606 prechamber (the first one gave a little fight, but the next five went in like butter). I couldn't imagine why they would design only one model with a different size, and then not make the tool available. It might be good to let Pelican know that the tool does in fact work on a 606, even though it is not listed. So yes, a 606 uses the coarser of the two thread choices of the end of the extractor tip.....Rich

EDIT: Text from Pelican- Extractor Tip (Double Ended) for prechamber in cylinder head, Applicable - Mercedes engine - OM601, OM602, OM603, OM604, OM615, OM616, OM617. $48.23
