vwnate1 - would you PM me the contact info of your guy? Happy to drive to Pasadena for good service.
Part of the problem is that the job should be done with the engine cold. If someone drives to my place to get a valve adjustment, the engine will be hot. However, most all the time, valves get tight. If the valves are tight while the engine is hot, surely they will be too tight when cold. If I have to adjust valves on a hot engine, I make them a little on the loose side. I have found this to work quite well, and they work out to be just right when checked cold.

HONEST Mechanics

...Are as hard to find as competent ones .

I closed my VW Shop a long time ago so I might be behind the curve on pricing .

Anyways, I know and trust Victor and I'll get you his information although I don't see anyone driving a 240D from QUEBEC to Pasadena for routine service .

I wasn't aware no one wanted to work on W123's anymore ~ they're dead simple and (IMO)pretty easy to work on, no much different than the old Air Cooled VW's I repaired long ago .

Rich : I all my years and various Shops working, I'm still the only Mechanic who's willing to do hot oil changes .

I see zero point in doing cold LOF works .

Hell ~ I even changed starters on blistering hot engines in August..... IMO it's all part of the job ~ if you don't like it GET ANOTHER DAMN JOB .

Nice car in the picture! I'd love to have one of those again.
Used to have a '69 300SEL 6.3, back in the olden days.

Thanks for the additional rec.

For anyone following this thread, I was quoted $210 at A German Auto Services, and $250 at Silver Star. I think that's outrageous.
I mean, I'd like to have eyes on my engine but at that rate, I'll buy the tools and do it my damn self...

Anyone else?

Actually, just rang Import Auto as recommended by 300dster and was quoted $110 -now we're talking.

If you would like to drive to Hesperia, I will do it for $50 including the gasket. I have quite a stock of parts (6 parts cars), so you may find something you need that would make the trip more worthwhile.
