factory block heater on 1982 300D?

My old 12v Cummins trucks always have a factory block heater. I've been looking around and cannot find one on the 300D. If installed, where would it be hiding? It appears from the link below that they were available.

Were they a customer option versus automatically installed? My car came from California so it may not have had one if it was an option. Here in Ohio, it would be handy. Thanks!

They were a customer option to the the best of my knowledge.

The ones I've seen on the older Benz ('70's era) were mounted in the lower water intake housings.

'82 om617 block heater is going to be screwed into the block on the exhaust side, rearward between cylinder 3 and 4.

Isn't that also the intake side on a 617?

Will a 601/2/3 heater fit a 617?

If there is no heater installed, it is nearly impossible to get the screw plug out to install one. I believe it is a 17 or 19mm hex. Removing the intake and exhaust manifolds, as well as a 3/4" drive breaker bar with cheater is the only way to get the plug loose. I am sure others have tried it without removing the manifolds, but I can't see how it can be accomplished that way. You may luck out, as some have the heater installed, but no cord........Rich

here's a picture of the installed location:

The part is available from Mercedes dealers. its around $55.

In one instance, i've unloaded the hex plug with a battery powered impact wrench. In
another, i broke the homebrewed 'socket adapter' and had to re-weld it twice. YMMV.

The hex plug is 13/16", same as the spark plug wrench. I used an old tubular type
SPW and a scrap 1/2" drive impact socket to make a tool that mounts on a 3/4" slider
bar, readily extended with a 1" pipe. I ran a 10mm bolt through and brazed both ends,
which made the tool torsionally stiffer, suppressing breaking the weld.

A 4' cheater bar and an Ox-Acet torch pre-heat almost always allow the plug to be
readily unscrewed from the water jacket. Its galvanically corroded to the cast iron block.
I've also used propane, but It can take a long time to pre-heat. ALL the water must
be removed from the water jacket to allow this to happen.

Swing clearance for the 4' bar obviously does require manifold and/or turbo
removal. See my previous article for more info.

My 82 has one, original. Not sure where it actually goes into the engine but I can take some pics or look.

If there is one in there, check out the electrical socket. There are two types of cord. One type screws on and the other type is just a push fit.

I am not sure of the latest info on the stock type Block Heaters but some in the past have bought the Block Heater Element only to find that it did not come with the adapter ring and the element OD was too small.

The red arrow points to the threaded adapter ring.

Note I cannot view the FPC site as it tells me my Browzer is out of date.
