Diesel Injectors
Prepping a few jobs for a week off from work, thinking I might tackle the injectors (240d 81) as I have no idea when they were last replaced.
Around the injector lines connecting to engine block, there's usually a little weeping diesel (i think) around cylinder 2 and 4. I'm also getting a congested arhythmic sound, really at a loss for how to describe it, other than that it sounds a bit like chest congestion. Usually hear it around 2/3rd gear. At highway speeds it disappears. Most I can say is that it doesn't sound like it's coming from the engine, more like an accessory. What's the usual procedure for doing a job like this? Seems the only part of the injector body itself that could need replacing is the spring, I'm assuming the rest can be cleaned with brake cleaner. Can I get away with buying new nozzles and new heat shields and soaking the injectors? |

For reference I have an 82 240D..
Prior to touching the injectors I did alot of research and concluded that it was not worth it for me to spend the money on the tools required to rebuild and test them myself since I only have one diesel. I was also weary about purchasing new "remanufactured" units since there are several stories on the web about them not being balanced correctly or wearing our quickly. I finally decided to go with a fellow forum member : greazzer, whom sent me a set of rebuilt/balanced injectors with a core charge and I was supposed to send mine back so I had no down time. (keep forgetting to do that part by the way) Point being you should reach out to him since he does great work at a relatively low cost and has the proper tools to make sure the injectors are all balanced correctly. Unless you have the tool to pop test and balance them, you can not just get away with buying new parts and installing them. |

There are 2 major options for the injectors. 1. spend time researching then source the parts and go through the learning curve after building a pop tester, install the injectors then possibly trouble shoot what you missed the 1st time. You might save a few pennies. Take this option if you absolutely want to get into being able to say "I rebuilt my own injectors".
Option 2: Contact Greazzer, ship him your injectors, receive a repaired, balanced set in a few days and install. Or give him a core charge and never be down. He will include everything except the socket to remove the injector but you likely have the socket in your tool box already.

It's my daily driver so unlikely I'll be able to cope with that significant of a learning curve. Most references I found in the archives were to his rebuilds anyway.

I would say that rebuilding them without testing is a shot in the dark. Yours could be perfectly good as-is and after rebuilding be worse. You wouldn't know. I built a pop-tester myself (w/ electronic pressure recording, see post), but mainly because I have two 300D's and like to delve (like member Stretch here). My thought is that the pop pressure is not a big deal and spray pattern is of more concern. I say that because I found 3 of the 5 injectors in my 1984 were for a non-turbo engine (popped at 1600 psig, and housing was marked), but changing to a set of 5 balanced turbo injectors didn't noticeably change how the engine runs.

I've been in touch with Greazzer, seems like a great way to go.
Not a ton of miles on the engine (175,000) but for the cost, seems like a good thing to take care of. |

Another +1 for Greazzer. He rebuilt my injectors, when I had issues(not at all connected with his work in the slightest, which was sterling) he rebuilt them AGAIN and balanced them to super tight specifications. He didn't have to do that. Outstanding, just ridiculously good customer service. He went WAY above and beyond what was reasonable for me.
His performance overflow spring has been great, too.

Geazzer rebuilt mine too. When one leaked, he sent me a replacement and was patient with ms being slammed with work and not able to install the injectors for months. I can't recommend his service highly enough.
