Once I pull the current Drivetrain from my car, and if I scout a coupe, I am guessing that per the comments, it should drop right in with 2 simple mods: DS & minor wiring harness.
A 240TD (wagon, NOT turbo) is available here (extremely rare), and it had the SLS pump head.

That engine is rare ... I wish I could grab another. I have two more heavy duty engine stands with nothing on them now ...

I've got all kinds of crap if you want to store it!

Any chance a standard head could be milled? It doesn't look terribly complicated

No thanks Ryan ... lol I just cleared out a TON (almost literally) and really pared down the hording .... Being more selective with my hording ... I guess that's a managed illness?

IDK about the milling. I can barely handle a hand drill ...

They can be milled of course, but you have to remove the prechambers first.

I mean milled to accept an SLS pump. It looks like there's a rear bearing recess, the big front hole, and then a raised section. You could probably add all that to a standard head so it accepts an SLS pump.

Or you could just fit a w124 combo PS/SLS pump (this is my plan for the wagon)

I could probably find one here (OM616 SLS head) if I really tried hard. I sold my 240TD shell to my mechanic who dropped a 615 with SLS head in it. He *might* have one. Shipping would be impractically expensive however

I do know of a local car once sold in Germany new. That may or may not indicate that on occasion Mercedes may have accepted special orders from individual customers. Through their dealers.

It was a 240d label on the trunk with a five cylinder engine in it. The car was seized by the Canadian government when they arrested a member of their notorious bernhoff-minhof gang when he tried to enter Canada. I cannot remember the right spelling of that gang s name. The car had to almost be new when it was impounded.

A guy about twenty miles away bought it at a public government auction. It may have had the four cylinder replaced with a five cylinder of course. But when the car turned up at my doorstep it did not have enough accumulated milage to make one think so. It was an automatic as well. At that time I remember thinking perhaps special order of some sort.

There are apparently a few on YouTube and other finds once one starts to dig deeper. I even saw the rear of a trunk badge, although I cannot make out the part # plus I cannot tell if the trunk badge was a carefully done mod.

My suspicions are one can drop in a 4 cylinder drive train as is, auto or manual, and the only issue will be the front section of driveshaft (Thanks to DeliveryValve's Comment).

So, the issue would be is there a drop in solution for the front section of the drive shaft???? That is, in the family of W123s, is there one which fits without modification?

Just remember, If your engine-less CD doesn't have the rear portion of the driveshaft, you're 240 rear section driveshaft will not fit because of a different center bearing placement.

I think maybe there was at one time 240D 3.0 designation sold in other markets.
