Larry, there were several other important factors which did not get discussed,,, like the potential for corrosion, the ability to move oil with it as it travels through the system, etc, but I chose to keep it simple on my arguments because of the mental image of the fire/crash potential....but I think I was just stirring up the American macho firebrand spirit in some and driving them towards the Duracool... so I quit...

If I wanted to portray the American macho firebrand spirit I will drive the E320
![]() ![]() Got the new pushbutton unit in and took it for a test drive. I went ahead and changed the remaining three switchover valves while in there. Seems to get the air coming out at the vent at 50 dF faster than the 123a did. I did not drive long enough to get the air temp down any lower but feel, if driven long enough, I can get cooler air blowing out. I have about come to the realization that what it probably needs is another 1200 cfm blowing out the vents. hmmmm, wonder where I can mount that bigger a/c blower ![]() ![]() ![]()

Jim,
Maybe you could use an inverter to produce AC and use one of those big shop fans that they sell at Home Depot. ![]() Seriously though, I wonder if the PBU is not cranking up the fan speed enough. Sometimes mine doesn't give me the air flow I would like. Usually it is pretty smart though. Another thought is that if the fan that draws air across the temp sensor is not turning, it may not be getting a correct temp sample causing the fan to run too slow. These fans are in different locations on the 124 cars, mine is to the right of the glove box liner which I have to remove to see that it is running. I have thought about testing it by seeing if it will draw cigarette smoke into the temp sampling vent next to the dome light. Problem is that I don't smoke and can't stand to think about cigarette smoke in my car for any reason. (There is no more obnoxious anti-smoker than an ex-smoker.) Just a thought, good luck, |

Larry, go to a candle store or import store and get one incense stick.... surely they have something good smelling....one would last you a lifetime of testing.
Maybe it would help to place a squirrel cage fan at the air pickup near the floor or under the dash... mounting would be easier than trying to put a bigger/stronger fan into the original location ( I guess most are inside the heater/evap core enclosure ... what a nightmare ) |

I suspect that there is alot of build up on the outside of the evap core. I have removed enough stuff before to reach in and touch the fins of the core and my fingers came back with some old black stuff on them. I'm not up to pulling the dash to clean it at this time though. I may get around to it one day.
After running it some more this morning (73 dF ambient, 95% humidity) I got 42 dF air out of the center vents after driving for 15 miles. I think it is slightly better than the 123 that was in it. I feel that if you have a car running r12 leave it alone. When I get the 240D back it is getting a new compressor/dryer and getting charged with r12.

Jim,
How is the 240D coming? I have not heard a progress report in some time. Have a great day, |

Engatwork,,,, I am surprised they had any 123 in it,,, it is much more dangerous than the Duracool.
![]() What is the difference between 123a ( your second post up ) and the 123 ( your last post ) ? ![]() |

While in aircondition.com, find the Refrigerantsales.com link on the left. I believe that it is through them that it costs only $15.
Good luck, |

The Black '85 300D
Quote:
If you would paint it white and keep it parked under a tree you may not need the A/C. just a thought, however just this day I spend over $800.00 on my '85 300 D turbo so I could get it out from under the shade. |

Alright - what would ya'll do?
There is a place down the street that went out of business (they had been in business for 90 years) and I was able to get 6 cans of Freon 12 for $15/ea. Thing is I don't have anything that I run it in right now. I could remove the Duracool and put it in the 300D but I think I will hold on to it till I get the 240D back and get that a/c system going on Freon 12. It has not been converted and when I rebuilt the engine the system still seemed to be under pressure. Or, should I convert the E320 to Freon 12 and get it to "meatlocker" status?
![]() ![]() There are some more cans available but looking on ebay it seems $15/can is a pretty typical cost. The price ain't far from Duracools price. In addition to the cheap freon I was able to get 12 gallons of Delo 400 for $3/gal and a Snap On Compression Test Kit for $20. It looks to me like the Delo 400 is their best seller because its gone the fastest. They are supposed to get another load of stuff in next week ![]() ![]()
