Unhappy Dr in the house? This happened to anyone here? Need help with elbow

3 weeks ago, while doing curls at the gym, I felt some pain on my right elbow.... slight.... continued going to the gym for 1-2 wks, even playing raquetball... then two wks ago while playing I swinged that arm pretty hard, feeling like if the arm was going to pop off , LOL.... ever since no raquetball, have cut down doing excercise with that arm. but still have that feakin pain...!!

I got a dr apt, but not for another week ..... Any ideas? I just came off 4 straight days, maybe 5 of no gym, and still ....

Not sure where your pain is but I had a soreness that was preventing me from using my right arm develop a few years ago. Turned out to be the little knob on the outermost part of my elbow was apparently growing some extra calcium or something and irritating the tendons and muscle tissue that is attached or stretched over it. The solutions I was offered, in order of the doctor's preferences were to rub it regularly and stop using it for strenuous events, but keep moving it through its full range of motion, take Cortizone shots, operate and scrape the offending growth off. I went for the first one and the problem went away in a week or so. I still get a twinge now and then, and go back to the rubbing. The process is not really gentle as you are supposed to be mechanically smoothing the new growth off. I also used Advil at the doctor's recommendation to reduce the inflamation for the first few days. Makes the rubbing a little less painful. Hope this helps, Jim

If the pain is on the outside of your elbow, where the tendon meets the bone, then chances are you have a tennis elbow.

Excellent site, worth a read. If it is tennis elbow then it is bad news. I have it since April, from playing badminton of all things. I will get cortizone injection on Friday, hopefully it will help. A couple of years ago I missed the whole summer season of playing tennis because of it. It is very annoying. There really is no cure for it, I just red an article about a study in Europe and the long term (12 months) results were the same for people who took anti-inflammatory medications and for those who took cortizone shots. I have been taking medication for weeks but the pain is still present although it is somewhat muted. But still no badminton or tennis in sight.

Personal question I know, but how old are you? It could be a visit from Arthur Rightus.

I Dont use it for a week or two sounds like the best and worst advice, LOL .....

Talking to a collegue today, they said another collegue had a similar problem from playing raquet ball also, will talk to him tommorrow. So it might be a tennis elbow... ALTHOUGH it started when doing preacher curls with dumbells at the gym, just got worse with the raquetball ..

Arthritis? Hmm, don't think so b/c of above...age? 39 in a month .

Got a doc's appt end of next wk. Will have to stop playing or excercising with that arm .... must do it.. will just stick to cardio. I had been doing good just working out with one arm, LOl....

But, guess where I was an hour or two ago ? Playing raquet ball ....

No more gym for that arm for till I see the Doc and see what happens.

Hopefully I won't have to take cortizone or meds.....

thanks for the info. I will check that link out...

CAUTION...the following may not be suitable for younger or more sensitive readers...:-)

A guy has a sore elbow, and he think's it's from playing tennis. He's pretty sure about his self-diagnosis, but to be safe he sees a doctor. As he walks through the lobby of the doctor's building, he see a vending machine in a dark corner that claims to diagnose your medical problems for 50 cents. He chuckles, shakes his head, and continues on to the doctor office. He sees the doctor, and explains what his problem is. The doctor diagnosis his condition in 15 seconds as tennis elbow, that he should stop playing for two weeks and take Motrin. He is the handed a bill for $200. The man is upset about this, and leaves the office grumbling. As he leaves the building, he spots that vending machine again. He figures, what the hell, he'll give it a try. He places 50 cents into the machine, and out pops a specimen cup and a piece of paper telling him to provide a urine sample. He is to pour the sample back into the machine for diagnosis. He takes the cup to a bathroom, pees in it, and pours it back into the machine. Lights blink, gears whirl, and out pops a piece of paper with the words..."You have tennis elbow. Rest for two weeks, and take Motrin". The man is amazed! Now he's even more upset that he had to pay the doctor $200 when this machine could have done the same diagnosis for 50 cents! He decides to really test the machine. The man goes home that evening, and rigs his toilet to not flush. His wife goes into the bathroom, and comes out complaining the toilet isn't working. He goes in to "fix it", and grabs a urine sample from the toilet. He does the same thing for his daughter. He then puts in a stool sample from his dog, and for good measure, he j**ks off into the cup. The next day he takes this concoction back to the vending machine. He puts 50 cents in, and out pops the specimen cup. He pours in his concoction, and the machine starts to shake, lights are flashing, gears are really whiring, and some smoke comes out the back. After minutes of this, the machine finally stops. The man thinks he broke the machine, but finally the diagnosis comes out on a long piece of paper...Your wife has VD, Your daughter is pregnant, your dog has intestinal worms, and if you don't stop j**rking off, you'll never get rid of that tennis elbow!

Too bad about the elbow. I regularly play tennis and about two years ago suffered from "tennis elbow" due to improper swing technique which was exacerbated by using a Blackburn double strung racquet. Though I played often with various doctors I never mentioned that I was going to have a cortisone injection until after I had one. I guess the concensus amongst my fellow players was I shouldn't have had the injection and that there is a limit of two or three anyways. It took time and more time to get to the point I could play again. Subsequently I had a minor flare-up again and used motrin, compresses, brace, massage and it responded as quickly as the cortisone. I have been playing regularly since and learned to correct my tennis swing. I also purchased a couple new racquets that favor saving the ole elbow. Patience and over-the-counter seems to be the way to go when you strain the elbow bursa. Good luck.
