New Storm

XOM stock is up 3 cents due to the new tropical storm. I think ExxonMobil is the most responsible oil company in the world. You notice they didn't overstate reserves like that other major did, causing its stock to plummet. They didn't jump in bed with the greenies like another major did wreaking havoc on their operations. I could go on ad nauseum, but in essence, they're not evil environment rapists. They supply great products at market value.

Same here, but I still do. If I ran out of gas I would walk past an Exxon station to whatever is next.

Are you kidding me? There's still oil on the beaches - to this day! You should go have a look...your ideas about the Valdez spill are fine and dandy, but you may prefer to click here. Scroll down to "How was the spill cleaned up?"...

When assigning blame on the Valdez incident, why can't anybody figure out the obvious: it was a MARINE accident. A SHIPPING accident. It could as easily have been full of peanut butter. The blame is heaped on Exxon for its deep pockets. It is not an oil industry problem, it is a transportation problem. If a train full of tanker cars wrecked and dumped into a bay, would people react the same way?

The person who said nature is the best cleanser is totally correct. 450 ships were sunk in the Gulf of Mexico during WWII. Many were tankers. The oil washed up all over the beaches everywhere. Was it cleaned up? No. Where is it now? Nature fixed it.

If you study the amount of oil lost into the sea by the normal course of operations of all worldwide shipping, it DWARFS any single spill by orders of magnitude. Seepage, discharges, etc are the biggest contributor to oil in the sea. The concentration is less, and doesn't make headlines or help anyones agenda.

Good post.
Oil companies have a bad rep and they don't help themselves. Only the nuclear folks suffer from worse press and tons of mis-information.

I would say all companies are evil before just saying oil companies are evil. I would think most people would be shocked to learn what their companies do in the pursuit of the dollar. And why does that pursuit somehow seem okay but when Exxon does it, its evil? oops, I am applying logic again. My bad!

I think the poster was right who stated that as long as we all have our gas guzzling SUV's to drive, we should shut up and quit whining.

I understand the marine accident angle. The problem isn't that they spilled it, it's that they half-assed the cleanup. I would say the same thing if JIF had dumped a tanker of peanut butter and left the mess. They ruined entire villages' economies and thus the villages themselves. It has nothing to do with whether they're an oil company or not - you make a mess YOU clean it up! The WWII analogy is ridiculous. Would you extrapolate collateral soft target damages as well?? My sister lives in Anchorage and if you ever get the chance to go up there and see for yourself, you would not believe it...
