If I saw any of the cops involved in the Oakland operations get hit by a truck on a deserted street, I'd drive right on by whistling Dixie, not lift a pinky to render aid.

Criminals with badges -- citizen's arrest for felony battery as well as on Federal civil rights charges would be appropriate.

Actually, the appropriate response for ethically conscious businesses would be simply to stop doing business with cops in uniform where such abuses happen regularly.

When anyone in uniform is unable to get a tire changed, a tank of gas, a cup of coffee, lunch at a diner, or a prescription filled at the local pharmacy, maybe they'll start seeing the point as well as questioning their orders.

I knew it was just a matter of time before Bill Ayers could have his party.

All these people would have to do to avoid this would be to obey the law. I guess such a novel concept is beyond their comprehension.

I'm sure that it's the one time that you would consider partying with Mr. Ayers...

The Constitutional rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights -- including free speech and free assembly -- trump all local laws. (And have been held to do so many times by US courts.)

Police brutality isn't the answer, and there will be a day of reckoning. Hope the cops who were involved are safely out of the country by that point. Seeing people get the Mussolini treatment on live TV would be unpleasant.

Crying "Police Brutality" is probably the most glaring sign of a law breaking LWNJ.

Wrong -- I'm actually pretty conservative economically as well as being a strong supporter of all of the rights guaranteed in the Constitution. I haven't broken any laws, but I fully and wholeheartedly support the God-given right of people to exercise their Constitutional rights without being subjected to physical violence and attempted murder. (Shooting someone in the face with a "non lethal" grenade pretty much amounts to attempted murder.)

What? Are you feeling guilty or something? I didn't mention your name.

I'd not feel guilty if I broke laws that were unconstitutional in the first place. I'd feel proud of it.

And yes, I'm crying "police brutality." What happened in Oakland appeared to be pretty vile, and the cops seemed to show zero restraint.

1. Not a LEO

2. The right to PEACEABLY ASSEMBLE and have a redress of grievances does not include destroyiing property and violent actions.

3. If the protestors want a revolution, so be it. If they do, then they should be prepared for casualties and not whine and cry like spoiled brats when someone gets hurt.

4. You mentioned a day of reckoning for the police: does that mean you are advocating violent overthrow of our government?

What Mr. Ayers needs is a 7.62 x 54 FMJ mid center of his brow. Should have happened long ago.

Don't care either way; as I said before, I'm not a fan of a lot of OWS's goals, and I'm not convinced that a revolutionary government would be better than the f***ing mess we have now.

However, using police brutality on mass demonstrations is in fact the best way to PROVOKE a revolution and enrage revolutionaries. The various US police forces appear to be following a textbook guide on how to make a situation worse, and how to turn more people against them. Each eviction and violation of Constitutional rights represents publicity for the protesters, and if it continues, the situation may well spiral out of control.

I know that I wasn't particularly for or against the OWS movement in the beginning, but the instances of police abuse have made me decidedly IN FAVOR of the protesters' right to protest without being subject to state violence. The more violence happens, the more people will be appalled and question the state.
