(1) Apparently the stick shaker did go off a few seconds before impact.

(2) NTSB spokesman indicated that the black box that monitors flight controls shows that just before impact someone in the cockpit hit the thrust levers to try to power out of the situation, and the engines responded normally. She also mentioned in this context, although I'm uncertain of the reason, that the British Airways 777 engines were Rolls Royce, while the Asiana plane was equipped with Pratt and Whitney.

It's my understanding, based on FOX interviews, that the warnings were going off, to include a vibrating yoke.

Just read this on CNN:

"The target air speed for the approach of the flight was 137 knots, and the crew can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder acknowledging the speed, Hersman said.
But the speed was significantly below 137 knots, and "we are not talking about a few knots," she said.
At about four seconds before the plane crash landed, the pilots received an "aural and physical" warning inside the cockpit that the plane was on the verge of an aerodynamic stall, meaning it was about to lose its ability to stay in the air.
The warning -- known as a "stick shaker" -- included a verbal warning the plane that was flying too low and a physical warning when the throttle shook."

And this from USA Today:

Asiana Airlines said the pilot in charge of the Boeing 777 was in training for flying that model of jet, and that this was his first flight into San Francisco at the controls of a 777, Reuters reported from Seoul.

"It was Lee Kang-kook's maiden flight to the airport with the jet." a spokeswoman for Asiana Airlines who was not identified by name said, the news agency reported. It reported that he had flown Boeing 747 jets into San Francisco's airport previously, and was assisted on this flight by another pilot with more experience flying the 777.

What is the purpose of the long pier or jetty sticking out from the end of the runway?

Either someone in maintenance did something boneheaded or the pilot really stuffed up the landing and struck the tail. Hope everyone got out OK.

Maybe it would be best if you reserve judgment until a significant amount of information is gathered. The planes tail did NOT fall off, and it was NOT the fault of maintenance.
