Had the policy of "To Protect and to Serve" as soon as they heard she was due for hip surgery they should have asked her for her doctor's name and phone number and called the doc to check out her story. If it checked out, all they had to do was let her go with a warning, difuse a situation and watch everyone CALM THE HECK DOWN. But, no these fine examples of public service chose to escalate thing and create further pain and trauma for her.
So your SPECULATION and SWAG is that she was on an unknown drug that altered her consciousness AND she was unable and,/or willing to follow the directions of not to drive? What next? Aliens took over her body?

What did they do? They arrested her after she got physical. Same as any other guy. It is against the law to get physical with a cop in many parts of the world.

Or just remain very calm like a certain trooper in Maine...

No she got rude then physical. He then had the right to change her if he wished. His call, not mine

We are not talking about respect. I don't care who is more respected. I wouldn't call you a snob. Just someone who picks a side before hand and justifies something out of his imagination

That is at his discretion. I don't have to refuse to press charges if you crossed me but that is my call.

Was it OK for him to refuse to give his name or show identification when asked? He should remember that he's a public SERVANT. Not a professional bully. Macho posturing has no place in the job. Seems he did everything to exacerbate the situation while not following appropriate procedure.

Charges or not, he deserves firing without pension or at best a desk job. And again, I will side with a productive scientist over some cowboy on the dole any day.

Would it be so horrible if every officer was required to initiate a traffic stop by showing their badge and introducing him/her self as Officer so-and-so of the such-and-such police department? At least with state troopers in NJ and PA, this seems to be standard procedure and would cut down on issues like this.

Looks like she's far more intelligent and useful to society than that Neanderthal twit of a cop. BTW - there might be a racial angle as well. She's Middle Eastern. There are a lot of ex-military people in San Diego, including on the police force. They were brainwashed not to have much love for people of Middle Eastern origin.

Lastly, she was charged with battery. While this may have met the letter of the law, with anyone other than a cop, unless there was actual physical injury, it would never have been prosecuted.
She is apparently highly intelligent and a contributor to society. Which is why her actions with the cop may have been out of character for her. I do think some cops enjoy getting physical, particularly with a single woman. It gets them off.

I don't know -- plenty of highly intelligent people also have a hell of a temper. Read about Harlen Ellison for a notorious example. I have a friend who's a software geek. She calls people names pretty frequently when she's riled up, yet she'd bend over backwards to help the same people when she's done having a temper tantrum.

Still, I'd rather have police be trained (and ordered) to do everything to diffuse a situation involving someone with a bad temper rather than aggravating it.

The good news is that the video recording will help the woman.

The cops in the video should not continue to work as cops. While the job they do is horrid, clearly those in the video lack the temperament to do it right.

Exactly. It's not that she was necessarily right in grabbing for the badge (though if a cop refused to ID himself I might have done the same), but that the cops in question did everything to escalate vs de-escalating.

Why not call it even? The officers drop charges and agree to a transfer to a desk job (not as if either of them had injury other than to ego). She agrees not to sue the department in the future.

Would it be seen as acceptable if a waiter assaulted someone who grabbed his name tag? Didn't think so. So why the hell is this behavior acceptable from a cop, when simply taking a few steps to the side would have diffused the situation? And why didn't the cop show his badge and give his name as asked -- was he hiding something, or just on a power trip as is usual with some cops?

Spdrun on his well worn 'I hate cops' routine. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that waiters are subject to much less angry interference with their job than are cops.

I've guessing that you've never been in a tight spot with a representative of the 'violent street scum predator contingent' with your only available assistance help being a uniformed police officer. I have a couple of times and was grateful for the help. Many other times I knew they were my potential backup.

Reminds me of a case an associate was involved in. He had received a traffic ticket and decided to hire a lawyer to take up his case in court. He carefully shopped around and found a lawyer who specializes in traffic ticket issues and has a history of WINS. Court date comes up, he and his lawyer attend court for the proceedings. The ticketing police officer also appears. The district attorney presented his case by calling the police officer to testify. The defense lawyer then presented his client's case. After the smoke cleared, the judge ruled in favor of the defendant. The defense lawyer then turned to shake hands with the police officer. The cop REFUSED to shake hands with the defense lawyer then turned and stamped out of the court room like a spoiled brat.

Question: are traffic tickets THAT big of a deal? Is winning a traffic ticket case THAT important to a cop's identity and ego? Seems in some cases, it is......

I don't hate cops. I hate cops who abuse their power.

He was dealing with an irate scientist/engineer type, not a "violent street scum predator." Though even a violent street scum predator should have rights, including the right to know the name of the officer who's arresting or ticketing him or her.

What would have been the big deal about him showing his badge and identifying himself when requested to do so?

I will definitely agree that rough treatment was not called for. And yes, an officer should show their badge, give their card, etc.

Nobody said he couldn't be asked to show ID. However, at this point, we'll never know since she grabbed the cop. Once you get physical, all bets are off. Most times I am stopped, they write the ticket, explain it to you, ask you if you have any questions. If the lady is as educated as you think, she should know that it isn't good to grab anyone, cop or not. OTOH, if she thinks her rank in the scientific community is a pass to do as she pleases, people like you and husky will probably go along with that until it is done to you.

Lets be honest. You will side against anyone who tells you you cannot do as you please until they are controlling others on your behalf.

Talk to your congressman. However, in this case, from the count of hands, there are probably 2 or 3 people involved so the likelihood of it being a rapist is pretty slim. 2 or 3 squad cars and 2 or 3 cops? Seriously?
