Hey all,
I just got back from the dealership where I was fortunate enough to get a 30 minute test drive in the new c-class.
I drove the c240 (the c320 was out).
Whoever thinks that car isn't worth the 30k price tag hasn't been in it yet, or driven it.
If you still think its not worth it after a test drive, you are smokin' crack.
Line up now boys, cause its gonna take three months to get em.
Trust me, putting the 1k down now to get yours will be worth it. I don't know if everyone elses local dealer will even have them yet, but if you live in Dallas, head down to Park Place and ask for Jeff.
Man I am still jazzed about the experience!!!
[The test car only had 27 miles on the odo.]

Andrew,

I drove one in Germany when I was here last time in July. Yes, it's a fantastic car. But I'm not going to stand still for them to take a free 12% gain and not share it with me.

I had a nightmare with my last new Benz, four years ago, and much of the nightmare was the Dallas based dealer. I won't mention their name here. If your car never gives trouble, you'll be okay, but if it does, you live in the wrong city in which you can manage to get it fixed.

By running to the dealer to line up and give MBUSA a free 12% to put in their fat wallet, you're throwing gasoline on the fire.

And, by the way, I don't do drugs.

Have a great day,
Larry

Larry,
Sorry you got burned, but that doesn't mean everyone else will.
It appears you still have a bad taste in your mouth from the experience--trust me, I understand that.
However, blaming the dealer, MBUSA, or whoever doesn't make things right--it just makes you look more bitter.
Also, the smokin' crack remark was just an expression, don't let it offend you.

ps
Thanks for the ignition email reply.

I was leaving a hotel yesterday morning near the Stuttgart airport. As you might imagine, there are a number of the new C Class cars on the streets here. I was at a stop sign and I glanced to see if there was traffic before I pulled out (a novel idea, maybe it will catch on in the US). In the distance I thought a 210 E Class was coming. I glanced back when it got much closer and it was a black C Class. I was surprised that it looked like an E Class from a distance.

It had the Sport 5 hole wheels and was a brand new car. What a beauty.

If MBUSA gets off their high horse, I'll buy one.

Have a great day,

I am now definitely the fool rushing in. I can hardly sit down today because of being very sore. I decided to let MB do the dirty deed to me again. Even though they ripped me off for the additional 20% savings that they now have because of the devaluated DMark, I bought a 2001 C Class six speed. It will be in Monday or Tuesday.

I couldn't be picky about options or color, but I believe I will be happy with it. I bought it from a different dealer than the one that burned me with the '96 E Class a few years back. Maybe I won't be the one with the lemon this time, and noone who cares that I have a lemon.

I would guess that MBUSA will be building a new sky scraper very soon with all the extra money they kept for themselves due the DMark evaluation.

Even though I could not keep from buying one of these cars, MBUSA is still, in my opinion, a bunch of money grubbing (*&%&*^)(*!!

You're right, the car ROCKS.

Have a great day,

Larry,
I knew if you were a true Mercedes enthusiast, you would come to your senses. Now we just have to get rid of that nasty temper of yours :-)

Congrats on your new purchase! I put a deposit on a c240 earlier this summer and it finally came in last week. I hope this is not a sign of dealer nightmares to come but it came in with an extra package option. I only wanted the C2 package and 5spd auto in 693 desert silver. The car came with the options above plus the $3000+ sport package! Beleive me I wanted the car that came in but was unwilling to pay the extra dough! The dealer did not budge on price, so we re-ordered the car and hopefully will be here within the month. At first they said christmas but quickly called me back with the better answer.

I did drive the c320 while I was there and was amazed with the power! That car would burn the wind! It was Amethyst with every option but the phone package. Um,$42,000+!

Anyway, have fun and I would like to see more drivers and owners come forward to share their experiences! Thanks!

Interesting combination. But if you wanted an automatic anyway, why did you not go with the C320. They are saying that if they get enough Six Speed interest that they will offer it in the 320 as well. If they do, I may be sick later.

I needed a car very quickly because everything I have seemed to break at the same time. My wife kept telling me that I should get a new car. I remember tougher times when she had to talk me out of buying a new car.

I had to decide between the compromise color and option combination of the C240 that I bought, and an SLK230 Kompressor that was in inventory. I felt that the V6 is a better engine, but that takes the price to $44K. I had to stop somewhere with the price running up. The idea was a stripper C240 at $30K, then I had to settle on the optioned out car for $34K. The SLK would be $40K and with the engine I wanted $44K. I had to stop somewhere on the price creep scale. My daughter was extremely disappointed that I did not show up in an SLK.

My original thought was that I could upgrade the standard suspension later with the Sport sway bars. I did this to my 300E with great success. After further investigation I have found that the Sport has stiffer springs, but the same sway bars. I will hesitate before changing springs. Maybe there will be aftermarket sway bars soon. The body roll on the standard suspension was noticable the first time I drove it, but the second time I suppose I had gotten accustomed to it.

I hope this car does not turn out to be a lemon like my '96 E Class.

WOW! Is it true? MBZ boasts that this car starts at $30k but with sport pkg and a 6-cyl it goes out at $44k?!!!!

Wow. So sad...

mokakio,

I did not make myself clear. I was also considering an SLK, which with V6 is $44K. The C240 with 6 Speed starts at $30K and you could option it to about $38K. The C320 could probably be optioned to about $43K.

Sorry for the confusion.

I found out today that it did not get released to the truckers today. This is very worrisome. In '96 when I ordered a new E Class, it got held up at the port for awhile. I did not discover until after it was out of warranty that it had been damaged. I could not trade it, everyone did not believe me when I told them that it had never been wrecked since I owned it. It had to have been damaged at the port and repaired. I am afraid that this is the same thing all over. If it does not ship in a day or two, I will be going over this car extremely closely to check for damage, I don't want to relive that nightmare.
