Try Rusty at ***************, he was quite willing to ship me one (the V8 version). Also the dealers don't seem to be charging too much of a premium on them.

Cool metal replacment for fiber glass belly pan cover

Will I guess I will have to wait till monday to hear if Caliber motors can get me the European metal engine cover that replaces the fiber glass one for my 1992 300E 3.0. I did not think to ask ,but how much does these cover weight? are they armor plated steel? not that bothers me but it the term Panzer tank may well be applied to a Mercedes-Benz fitted with this option.

Since my dealer parts person said he did not see availability in Germany and was wiring Germany to inquiry about this part (no price Quote yet) I am wondering how many spares of these exsist since they seen to be indistructable.

I will keep every one informed as to what I fine out next week.
Singing off.

Maybe a dead end post but

is there any new info on these? I'm still VERY interested as I'm about to replace an RTV repaired oil pan on my W124.

I don't believe they offered a belly pan for the 124 Diesels. ke6dcj had one on his 360TE wagon while he drove it on the W Coast, you might ask him if it was custom built.
Does you car have the bottom covers on it? They may help protect to some degree but if your running a sport suspension (lowered chassis) or just plain have a lot of pot holes or ruts where you drive then a steel belly pan might be a good idea and a good shop should be able to fab one out of aluminum diamond plate

I do have the bottom covers. I think the FSM calls them "sound encapsulation panels." They're black plastic with some foam on them. A legit. oil pan plate/shield will be a good project after the paint work is done.

Those "sound encapsulation" panels are expensive, like over $500 the set on the 124 diesel. They threw mine out when the shop where I worked was closed for a few months and I won't be running down to buy new ones!
I cleaned one on an SDL once, its a messy job what with all the gunk that builds up on them and the foam deteriorates.
You can drop the pan without having to remove the engine.
If your pan is just mildly cracked it can be welded by a pro that knows his stuff. With the oil level sensor and reservoir off to the sides of the pan its a fairly complex pan and I'm certain a new one won't come cheap. OTOH there are dead engines around that could be a source of a pan if the seller is willing.

That's not cheap. My panels are still good, just oily and dirty. I managed to find a NOS pan for about half of retail and I'm thinking a skid plate of some type will stop or lessen any damage in the future. Whatever was hit, once upon a time, cracked both the front of the main pan and the corner of the side sump. The side sump was welded but the main pan was sealed with RTV (it's actually sealing but I don't trust it over the long term). I'm not ready to scrap it just yet. I have a cousin with a couple types of welders and he thinks we could save it.

Do You have a Part Number for the METAL Skid Plate from the EPC?..also it MAY Take Different hardware to secure it ...Like 8mm Bolts instead of the self tapping screws...As I Have a Source in EUROPE that CAN Get ANYTHING from MB
and He ships to me several times a year

I Have Installed the METAL plates on my W209/210 and W211 Its Worth the cost!

All it takes is One Carrier landing to damage the oil pan....The Metal plate pays for itself!

124 520 31 42 references 124 520 09 42.

I'm not sure when or why the change.

Protective Plate,Oil Pan

124 520 31 42 is the correct part number for the 124.128 chassis.
(And a whole bunch of other W124 s)

Models:
300 CE 88-89, 300 D TURBODIESEL USA 86-87, 300 E 2.6 USA 87-92, 300 E USA 86-06, 300 TD TURBODIESEL 87-87, 300 TD TURBODIESEL USA 87-87, 300 TE 4 MATIC 90-93, 300 TE 88-92, 300 TE USA 88-92
==========
Chassis:
124026/576, 124030/576, 124050/508, 124090/15U, 124090/578, 124133/576, 124193/15U, 124193/578, 124290/15U
==========

BUT...MB of South Atlanta shows retail @ $274.00 USD
[Which puts it just above "UnObtainium" in cost.]

(Anon) "They" say it's Steel.

I'd be curious about the mounting method for the metal plate. My stock plastic panel barely hangs in there with the current system of a small springy female insert which is put in a small square opening in what appears to be a non structural bracket under the car, using a screw with a built-in wide washer.

I would not want to try to mount a panel weighing 29 lbs on those same screws!

(I think there is a business opportunity for someone who can come up with some sort of improved panel mounting system, like a Dzus fastener or something...)

Rgds,
Chris W.
