Time for some Paint and Upgrades

The old girl is off to the paint guy today. She's getting a new, freshly painted front clip in Pastel Beige, 684-H to match the rest of her:

1. New Fenders
2. New Hood
3. AMG Air Dam (Chin)
4. Any other possible rust on the front clip cleaned up and permantly treated
5. Inner plastic inserts in each wheelwell, re-dyed black
6. Inner wheelwell cleaned up and topcoated in chassis black
7. Front jack points cleaned, and new welds, and "like-new" appearances in the works.

Here's some snappies. She looks sort of sad. I went ahead and ordered the front bumper to fender braces / brackets from the dealer out of Atlanta. Still looking for the black plastic pieces which go on top of the bumper.

I should have the ol' girl back in a week or two.

...is that a gas price of $3.13 in the background?

Thank you Tom !

No, it's Pastel Beige 684-H.

AND, the good news. I got your old engie tipity top ! A little water injection, about 2 weeks worth, (very low volume .75 GPH nozzle) and guess what ? The PSI is around 375-ish on every cylinder. I am thinking that the rings got stuck somehow.

The bad news. I just got called out of town for a week, so I need to really hustle on some injectors tonight or they will be waiting until Friday or Saturday. Thank Goodness the holiday is coming up.

And, J-Man -- That is the price of gas in my neck of the woods. It was around $3.07, but it jumped this past week. Diesel is still high ... $3.57 a gallon.

I will post some pictures of the fenders. They had some very very unusual rot and rust issues. Both sides, same exact deal. You got me. The hood was a P-A-P quicky, not bad shape but wrong color.

I will get some pictures of the finished product shortly. I wish I had this week to clean up my garage and tinker with some projects. Poop

Fender Rot

Here are the old fenders and their rot. Within a week or so, I will have "new" sheet metal from the firewall foward attached an painted. I just received from the Dealer the bumper brackets for the 3-piece Euro Bumper. And, I just dropped off the inner fender plastic pieces, re-dyed satin black, along with the fastners cleaned up. Getting a little excited over the restoration at this point.

Does anyone have the 3 plastic pieces which goes on top of the front bumper, 2 end pieces and one center piece. It's for cosmetic purposes from what I can tell. They are unique to the 3-piece Euro bumper.

That looks like the classic rubber bumper end internal frame transferred rust. How were the condition of those frames on yours? I really hate how they nearly universally kill the fenders right at the bolt hole. When I get around to this, I'm thinking of spacing out the frame with a bunch of nylon washers and perhaps even using a plastic form of attachment, anything to keep the same problem from happening again and again, though you going to the euro bumpers will probably work just as well!

This thing is really coming together! Looking forward to completed fender pics, are you having them do a racing stripe?

Racing stripes ? Down the center of the car or along the sides ? I did not think of that .... hmmm

I know the fender rotted in that area, but to that extreme ? I never saw it that bad. Actually, the fenders looked great until I blasted them with a pressure washer and huge chunks of rusted frosted flakes went flying. LOL.

The new fenders are pristine. They are on par with the white ones I had about a year ago and sold. I was in a total panic when I realized I actually needed another set. Then, I stumbled into just a nice pair at the P-A-P, so that drama went away. I am having them painted on both sides to make sure they don't rust during my lifetime. Actually, everything from the firewall foward (excluding cowl) is being refurbished 100%.

Once the sheet metal is done, I am going to powder coat all front suspension parts and install brand new OEM German made components. That is my fall, post-brutal heat project. I got about a dozen major projects about 80% done, so I am getting a little giddy seeing a lot of finish lines in sight. Excluding the engine, I am thinking the front part of the car from the firewall foward will be "new" in all regards. That's the goal at least.

I should have pictures in about 1-2 weeks. I was out of town for 7 days because of my employer. I got back and had 9 sets of injectors waiting for me to crank out. I got 2 more sets and I am totally caught up. That's tomorrow's errands -- to the post office to ship them.

Thanks folks for the kind words and encouragement !!!!

Looking really good, perhaps I need to make a road trip to check it out once you have it back together, along with a side trip to little pigs.

You should ... and, lunch is on me. I just found some notes of a few months ago. I owe you a concise statement on converting from auto to manual. My bad. I am truly sorry ... I will have your list by Sunday night.

No problem, the trans swap is on hold for just a little while. But I''ll get there. Also thinking about getting a Euro injection pump, well maybe the 5 speed will come first.

Glad to see all the progress on your car. Perhaps sometime this fall for the road-trip.

That sounds great!

Where did you put the water injector?

What was the psi before?

Electric Water Pump Time

Here are some snappies of the mod'd water pump housing. No need for the OEM set-up since one gets rid of the mechanical water pump and thermostat with the D-C EWP.

This was actually incredibly easy compared to the last year or so tinkering with one design or concept after another. This weekend I am hoping to get my car back from the paint shop and install the electric water pump. Once that happens, I will be down to the altenator and A/C pump-- a "pump" on each side of the engine.

And the Paint Job is almost done !

The paint job has turned into a little more than a swap of fenders and hood. No pictures yet of the painted hood. The hood was pretty much flawless, just wrong color. LOL. This is the hood used for the mold to make a carbon fiber hood. That's most likely a 2014 project at this point. Right now, looking to get the body into perfect 100% condition by Thanksgiving, then I am shooting for rapidly wrapping up the major projects before Christmas, e.g, Electric Water Pump, Vacuum Pump Delete, Soundproofing, Interior - Carpet, et cet.

Here is a picture of the fender with AMG air chin in the background.

Also, the jackpoints were a total surprise. A little digging around and the metal was pretty much shot around the steel tube part. Inside was a new surprise. About a baseball sized piece of bondo, or a collection of pieces which was about the size of a baseball. Here's the patch panel. Right now, both sides are done and about perfect. Got some nice black textured stuff from 3M. Supposedly used on European cars. Hopefully, it will be done next week.

I know that some modern cars are being built with clutched alternators that de-clutch when the battery is charged. Is that something you could do to further reduce what is being run off the engine? Could you use an AC clutch to do this?
